Turns out Mr. Ewell is left handed, and since Mayella's left eye is bruised Atticus seems to be trying to imply that it was actually Mr. Ewell who beat Mayella.

He then explains how he found the girl-in what condition she was- "Found her lying on the floor in the middle of the front room, one on the right as you go in. She was pretty well beat up,..."
