Inviting a student to attend their IEP meeting meets the minimum compliance for IDEA. IDEA requires that students are invited to the IEP meeting before a student turns 16. The intent behind this is to encourage students to be "active participants in their transition and IEP meetings, and even lead the meetings". ( Transition Coalition, 2021). In order to do this, students need to practice and work on their self-determination skills and put them to practice. The self-determination skills assist students with the involvement of their own IEP meetings and understanding how it impacts their future.
