Javon and Chris have been friends since 3rd grade. Javon seems to be very good at a lot of things. He’s funny, naturally athletic, receives awards, positive praise from many adults, and is the star of their basketball team. In class, Javon raises his hand often and almost always has the right answers. When Chris is sitting next to Javon, he looks to him for answers and doesnt raise his hand because he feels like it’ll take too long to think of the answer and Javon will get the answer right first anyway. When they are in social settings Chris feels comfortable and confident but also suppresses his interest and skillset in playing chess and soccer. He hasn't had the opportunity to showcase his skills because there’s no soccer team at school and chess is a small club, as a result, no one views him as gifted in any areas.

Discuss + Comment:

How, if at all, does this scenario resonate with you?

When you think of the various aspects of your identity, how did you learn these truths about yourself?

How have aspects of your identity been challenging for you or challenged by external factors?

What advice would you give Chris?

Tiffany is a Junior at Rivers High School, she has a passion for science and math. When she was younger she spent summers with her aunt and cousin in DC visiting different museums and doing STEM activities. Tiffany has been best friends with Layla since the fourth grade. While they share a long history of friendship, they have different attitudes toward school. Layla doesn't prioritize academics and has different interests. She often scolds Tiffany for sounding white or acting white. Tiffany wants to attend UCLA to major in chemistry for pre-med, Layla wants her to go to Clark Atlanta because it's an HBCU and her boyfriend goes to Morehouse. Tiffany is struggling with making a decision.

Discuss + Comment:

How, if at all, does this scenario resonate with you?

When you think of the various aspects of your identity, how did you learn these truths about yourself?

How have aspects of your identity been challenging for you or challenged by external factors?

What advice would you share with Tiffany or Layla?

Jason and Amanda have a 5-year-old daughter named Jasmine. At Amanda’s family reunion Shannon, Amanda’s aunt told Jasmine to go play with the kids and get out of adult space. Jasmine said no, I dont want to play over there. Shannon says “Dont tell me No. Dont be a rude kid.” Amanda laughs and takes Jasmine to go play. Amanda and Jason were raised with different social norms. Later that day, Jason was upset with that situation and wanted Amanda to address her aunt to let her know that that should never happen again. Amanda doesn't see the issue and feels like her husband is creating friction with her family.

Discuss + Comment:

How, if at all, does this scenario resonate with you?

When you think of the various aspects of your identity, how did you learn these truths about yourself?

How have aspects of your identity been challenging for you or challenged by external factors?

What advice would you give Chris and/or Amanda?
