Joe felt the same feeling as he felt in the attic he lived in when his mother died; losing his home hurt his feelings a lot.

Joe's family had to move to the camp near the Idaho Mine, his father's workplace. However, Joe had to sleep in the school and do labor, after Thula, his stepmom, couldn't stand with him anymore. Joe wasn't able to feel his parent's warmth and appropriate protection as a child. Not only was Joe excluded emotionally from his parents, but he was also physically away from them. This left another feeling of hurt in Joe's heart.

Since Thula gave birth to couple more children, they had to move to a new shelter including Joe. Joe and his father built their dream house together in Sequim, although it would only be half-completed. He was able to attend to high school, where he met Joyce, the love of his life. Then the Great Depression made Joe's family impossible to make a living out of their farm. The family had to leave again, but Thula demanded that Joe had to stay in the house. And just like that, he had to survive again, entirely by himself. Joe was just a teenager, and this was still too much for him to withstand.

The next day, Joe was able to withstand the hard fact that he was abandoned by his family, and had to find out a way to survive. He would hunt, forage the woods for mushrooms and berries, fish salmons for food supply. Then he would do all kinds of hard labor to earn money. This was both physically and mentally challenging for Joe, as he always felt so lonely in the half-built house.

After graduating from the high school that Fred, his older brother was working in, Joe came back to Sequim to earn more money. He was going to attend college since he was scouted by Al Ulbrickson, the head Crew Coach of the University of Washington. He shoveled steaming asphalt, cut down cottonwoods, and cut hays in the farms. Although Joe was a strong and well-built person for his age, the labor still made him very tired.

The theme of "The Boys in the Boat" is that one often needs someone to rely on to survive. Joe was able to bear the hard labor because of his beloved Joyce, when he was apart from Joyce he would often have dinner with his neighbors. During his college life, his rowing team/colleges would eventually become his family. Multiple examples from the book show that Joe had to rely on many people around him since his own family had abandoned him.
