After reading this document, Domain 1, I think the most essential aspect is 2.1, which, in general, is to make the patient fully informed, acknowledge that communication barriers exist, and actively seek interpreters (Migrant & Refugee Women’s Health Partnership, 2019). This knowledge is essential because when I encounter patients whose first language is not English, I should follow this standard and assess their English level to see if an interpreter is needed (Migrant & Refugee Women’s Health Partnership, 2019, p. 15). I will ensure that the patient has all the necessary information before deciding to avoid misunderstandings due to unfamiliarity with the associated risks and treatment outcomes (Migrant & Refugee Women’s Health Partnership, 2019, p. 14).

Migrant & Refugee Women’s Health Partnership.

Hijama is a widely practised traditional medical treatment method that combines cupping and massage (What Is Cupping Therapy? Uses, Benefits, Side Effects, and More, 2022). Cupping therapy is a technique that uses suction to create a vacuum effect on the skin (Shabi Furhad & Bokhari, 2019). Hijama is widely popular in Afghanistan for promoting blood circulation and detoxifying the lymphatic system and is believed to effectively treat blood disorders and rheumatic diseases (What Is Cupping Therapy? Uses, Benefits, Side Effects, and More, 2022). Many pain disorders have been found to benefit greatly from cupping therapy, with musculoskeletal pain, migraines, and tension headaches being the most common (Shabi Furhad & Bokhari, 2019b). Hijama promotes better health by improving circulation, aiding detoxification, and supporting the body’s natural healing process.

Shabi Furhad, & Bokhari, A.

Afghan carpets feature vibrant colours thanks to natural plant dyes (p-themes, 2024). Rich in cultural significance, rugs reflect the positive outlook of local people. Some patterns symbolize rebirth, with floral designs representing nature's beauty and resilience, while others depict Afghan history, including conflict and resistance, serving as artistic expressions and narratives of perseverance (p-themes, 2024). In creating and selling these beautiful rugs, women can gain emotional satisfaction and relaxation, enhancing their self-esteem and sense of belonging, thereby improving their overall mental health. Rug weaving provides Afghan women with the opportunity for economic independence, allowing them to support their families and gain empowerment (p-themes, 2024).

P-themes.

In Afghanistan's predominantly Sunni Muslim culture, Eid al-Fitr is a significant festival where people pray for Allah's forgiveness, mercy, and peace for all living beings (Wikipedia Contributors, 2019). Afghans prepare for Eid al-Fitr by cleaning their homes and shopping for new clothes, candies, and snacks, and on the day itself, they begin with the Iftar prayer, gather with family, and exchange greetings such as "Happy Eid al-Fitr" and "May your fasting and prayers be accepted by Allah." (Wikipedia Contributors, 2019). During this holiday, people encourage mutual forgiveness and reconciliation (Wikipedia Contributors, 2019). These practices can enhance mental health by creating a supportive environment, reducing stress, and strengthening relationships.

Wikipedia Contributors.
Addressing Mental Health in Refugees: Insights from the Australian Refugee Health Practice Guide

Afghan refugees may often have health problems in Australia, such as mental illness. Common symptoms in adults include complicated grief, addiction, and concerns about memory and concentration (Refugee Health Assessment: Australian Refugee Health, n.d.). Additionally, refugees seeking psychological treatment may experience

chronic pain, indicating underlying mental health issues, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (Health of Refugees and Humanitarian Entrants in Australia, Mental Health, 2023). Healthcare professionals should comprehensively screen for emotional health and mental disorders post-arrival, focusing on migration history, settlement, and trauma, using SDQ for children and HEADSSS for adolescents, while referring severe cases to specialized services to support and enhance refugees' mental well-being (Refugee Health Assessment: Australian Refugee Health, n.d.).

Health of refugees and humanitarian entrants in Australia, Mental health.
The Impact of Social Inclusion and Non-Discrimination on the Health of Afghan Refugees in Australia

Social inclusion promotes physical and mental health and reduces morbidity by providing practical and emotional support and helping to cope with economic and material difficulties, while social exclusion worsens health by depriving people of necessary resources and leading to psychological harm (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2024). This pattern is pervasive in vulnerable groups. Afghan refugees are severely affected by psychological distress, which is closely related to the long-term impact of displacement and the newfound sense of identity and independence (Alemi, James, Cruz, Zepeda, & Racadio, 2014). Australian society should actively extend hospitality to Afghan refugees. Hospitality enhances social inclusion, self-esteem, and well-being (Altinay et al., 2023).

Alemi, Q., James, S., Cruz, R., Zepeda, V., & Racadio, M.
