"We were -- knee deep in the Big Muddy,But the big fool said to push on."

The "big fool" in this song, the captain, is representing Lyndon Johnson. The allusion here is that the President sees what a terrible situation the war was but refused to back down. This line is repeated many times through out the song.

"All at once, the moon clouded over,We heard a gurgling cry... And we just made it out of the Big Muddy. With the captain dead and gone."

This song came out around the time Lyndon Johnson announced he wouldn't be running for re-election. The "captain" drowning is representing how LBJ's refusal to withdraw from Vietnam eventually ended his career.

"Well, I'm not going to point any moral... But every time I read the papers, that old feeling comes on; We're, waist deep in the Big Muddy. And the big fool says to push on."

As the first televised war, the public was much more aware of the situation in Vietnam. They saw how the government was trying to convince them victory was near, but the facts were against that claim. People were losing faith in the government.
