WEEK 2 - ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

SOURCE 1 CITATION: Giertz-Mårtenson, I 2012, ‘H&M - documenting the story of one of the world's largest fashion retailers’, Business History, vol. 54, no. 1, pp. 108–115.
SUMMARY: The author intends to document the history of H&M, one of the world's largest fashion retailers for the sake of preserving its history as the state of the fashion industry steadily changes. This source claims that it is important to preserve H&M's history because it serves as a vital example of what happens when the business industry and the fashion industry interfere with each other. This is supported by findings regarding the current social state of the fashion industry, where the companies do not seem to care about preserving its history.
CRITIQUE: This is related to my current understanding of fast fashion because this is not the kind of viewpoint most sources go for. It fits in with the other sources because it explores a different side of fast fashion, specifically a piece of its history. The similarity that it has in common with the other sources is that the rise of fast fashion has changed society's attitudes towards making clothes sustainable and long-lasting. The argument is fairly strong as the author has provided sources alongside their findings. It is a useful contribution to the existing field of knowledge, as it provides a point of view that is less explored than the other viewpoints. I would recommend this source because it sets itself apart from the others by providing a different viewpoint.

SOURCE 2 CITATION: Joung, H.M 2014, ‘Fast-fashion consumers’ post-purchase behaviors’, International Journal of Retail & Distribution Management, vol. 42, no. 8, pp. 688–697.
SUMMARY: The author intends to investigate how fast fashion customers behave after purchasing fast fashion and how it changes the relationship they have with clothes in terms of hoarding and disposing of clothes in an environmentally friendly manner. This source claims that the purchase of fast fashion is related to its hoarding and disposal. This is supported by evidence collected from a survey questionnaire where 274 of the 335 students in the questionnaire have purchased fast fashion before.
CRITIQUE: This is related to my current understanding of fast fashion because this is a source that correlates with what I plan to feature in my promotional video. The similarity that it has in common with the other sources is that it does relate to the topic of environmental costs of fast fashion in my next source. The argument is considerably strong, as it provides evidence collected from a survey questionnaire the author had conducted. However, the evidence could be strengthened if the survey size was larger. It is still a useful contribution to the existing field of knowledge, as the evidence collected from the questionnaire is a vital piece of data that cannot be replicated by anyone else. I would recommend this source to someone because it has pages of information on the topic of fast fashion customers.

SOURCE 3 CITATION: Bick, R, Halsey, E & Ekenga, C.C 2018, ‘The global environmental injustice of fast fashion’, Environmental Health, vol. 17, no. 1, pp. 92–92.
SUMMARY: The authors intend to investigate the environmental and human costs that come at the expense of making fast fashion affordable. The source claims that the current production process of fast fashion is a major environmental issue because of how much of it is wasted yearly and the human cost that comes from the unsafe factories that the fashion brands discreetly operate. This is supported by statistical evidence collected from research.
CRITIQUE: This is related to my current understanding of fast fashion because this is another source that correlates with what I plan to feature in my promotional video. The similarity that it has in common with the other sources is that it also relates to the topic of environmental costs of fast fashion that is featured in my previous source. The argument it presents is strong, as it provides different aspects of environmental destruction that the mass production of fast fashion has contributed to. This is a particularly useful contribution to the existing field of knowledge, as this source features different types of environmental destruction that the mass production of fast fashion has brought upon. I would recommend this source to someone because it explores multiple points regarding the environmental destruction brought upon by the mass production of fast fashion.

VIDEOS
1.
CITATION: Choudhury, B & P 2020, How Does Fast Fashion Impact The Environment || Environmental impact || Fast Fashion || 2020, video, YouTube, 3 May, viewed 5 April 2021, <https://youtu.be/BKNDwgJCZdM>.

CRITIQUE: My promotional video will be distinct from this one because I will provide sources to support my statistical evidence. I will also focus more on the environmental destruction the mass production of fast fashion has on Australia instead of the United States of America.

2.
CITATION: Maifield, A 2018, The fast Fashion industry 30 second commercial Apes, video, YouTube, 19 October, viewed 5 April 2021, <https://youtu.be/Qes3Q8wmEO4>.

CRITIQUE: My promotional video will be distinct from this one because I will have way more information featured in the video. It will also include videos instead of a slideshow of images.

3.
CITATION: Backenstos, H 2018, Fast Fashion Pollution, video, YouTube, 26 January, viewed 5 April 2021, <https://youtu.be/qSjvsAp_jHE>.
CRITIQUE: My promotional video will be distinct from this one because I will include sources in my video to back up its claims. These will appear in the form of footnotes.

My promotional video is going to feature snippets of ads from well-known fast fashion retailers such as H&M that claim that their clothes are made using recycled material. This is going to contrast with footage of the unsafe working conditions from the factories that make their clothes. I am also going to feature sourced statistical evidence regarding the wages that the workers are being paid, alongside garments that are being sold at a considerably high price. The sources for my claims are going to appear as small footnotes beneath the claim. This video is going to be about 30 seconds long and it is going to end with a bibliography included in the credits.

The promotional video that I will be planning to make for this assignment will be about fast fashion and the effect it has on the environment and its workers. The video will be targeted towards people who actively consume fast fashion and those who are curious about fast fashion. The reason for this is because fast fashion is everywhere in today's society and I believe that it is important to be aware of what it contributes.
