         <description><![CDATA[<div>The newly developed smart bioelectronic pacifier may be vital to improving the care of premature infants. Currently, these premature infants are subject to multiple blood draws per day to monitor vital information such as blood count and electrolytes (Lim et al., 2022). These frequent blood draws can have adverse effects on the infant's health including sepsis. The bioelectronic pacifier is an important development in monitoring newborn electrolytes. It is non-invasive and provides a continuous sample and measurement compared to the discrete sampling blood draws provide (Lim et al., 2022). This allows for early intervention which is vital with premature infants. Not only is it a monitoring device, but it serves as a comfort device to infants. It is easily attached to commercial pacifiers which can save costs. This bioelectronic device has the potential to make great improvements to care in the neonatal intensive care unit.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Premature infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit often require continuous monitoring of critical vitals such as vital signs and electrolytes (Lean et al., 2018). Current monitoring methods are often bulky and invasive, including frequent blood draws. Lim et al. (2022) have created a wireless, bioelectronic pacifier that monitors real time continuous sodium and potassium levels without the need for frequent blood draws. This device continuously collects saliva through a channel that is read by a sensor that can be attached to a commercial pacifier (Lim et al., 2022).&nbsp;The information is then transmitted to a smart phone or tablet.  Monitoring of electrolytes in premature infants is vital due to their immature body systems. In one study, results were comparable to the current "gold standard" method utilizing blood draws (Lim et al., 2022). This device allows for continuous monitoring which current blood draws cannot provide. This continuous monitoring can help providers with early interventions. Additional studies are needed before full implementation which will allow newborns to avoid frequent blood draws that risk injury to their fragile skin.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>
