I AGREE !!!! Almost all advertising manipulates our minds. Advertising does not sell the soap, washing powder, toothpaste or cologne. It offers us eternal youth and health. It promises us a rich life experiences, free from physiological constraints. The simplest “sprouts” of manipulation in advertising in modern computerized society is brainwashing and promotion of the audience through commercials on TV, radio. Promotion is usually used in such media as newspapers and magazines. Advertising manages the human subconscious. High-quality PR approach ensures a high demand for any product. First of all, the fact is that every society has formed some sustainable spending habits. For example, if the product has the status of a scarce, it will be of high demand. Manipulation in advertising related to the concept of “deficit”, mainly relating to luxury goods (cars, jewelry). Manipulation in advertising is often associated with the price of goods. For example, the high price is an indicator of quality. The client does not always understand that there is an optimal price / quality ratio (Phillips 1997). Manufacturer, overstating the price of goods and reflecting it in advertising, is manipulating the consciousness of consumers (or even the unconscious, wishing to make buyers to believe that the more expensive goods are better).

In addition, the manipulation in advertising uses such factors as “do as everyone does” or “do as we do” (Van Tuinen 2011). Thus, the manipulation in advertising is the result of the imposition of some ideas to the audience. Advertising surrounds us everywhere, and manipulates our minds. It dictates us what to do, what to buy, what to wish. Society should realize the threat of this phenomenon and try to confront it.

Advertisers frequently emphasize the emotions that products elicit rather than the products' actual qualities. Many ads aim for an emotional response that dissuades consumers from thinking about the product’s value or functionality. Ads may depict common scenarios that viewers can relate to or remember, such as a first date or the birth of a child, in order to increase the level of emotional engagement with a product.

Ads also increasingly masquerade as entertainment, offering humorous narratives in order to draw consumers in. Clever writing, cutesy mascots and unconventional narrative strategies can all help engage consumers, making them more likely to remember a product. Many companies selling unhealthy products, such as beer or candy bars, use humor to distract consumers from the negative aspects of these items.

Finally, advertisers create desire for products by preying on consumers’ fears. Cleaning products and hand-soap companies, for example, often market their products aggressively during times of mass illness. Often, these products do nothing to defend against illness, but the ads play on people’s fears, leading them to believe that the items are effective.
https://www.reference.com/business-finance/advertisers-manipulate-people-95b9ecfac0787283
TYH

I agree...
Manipulative advertising can push the boundaries of who should be considered an expert. For example, the commercials that used to feature a medication being represented by an actor who played a physician on a television series were forms of manipulative advertising. The consumer tended to trust the opinion of the actor because of the fame the actor had gained playing an expert. The danger is that the actor, more than likely, was not an expert on the subject and could have provided misleading information. A more contemporary form of manipulating advertising with an "expert" opinion is when a political candidate distorts an opposition's stand on an issue to win votes. The politician is seen as an expert on campaign issues, and twisting an opponent's stand is an attempt to manipulate the voters.

1)Attractiveness

The desire to be associated with attractive people is employed in manipulative advertising in several different ways. A loose association between attractiveness and product marketing is placing an attractive woman near a car to sell the car, or an auto part associated with it. The woman has nothing to do with the product, but her presence attracts the target audience of males in a certain age group. A more direct example of attractiveness in manipulative advertising is a shaving cream commercial that shows an attractive woman being drawn to a man who just used the product. These commercials also include attractive males to try to associate the idea that the male can be considered more attractive for using that particular shaving cream.

2)Lifestyle

Marketing professionals try to associate their product with a particular lifestyle to reach a specific target audience. For example, a beer company shows a group of friends having a good time in a clean night club drinking the beer to associate it with that type of scenario. Pick-up truck manufacturers use men with facial stubble who are dressed in jeans and a flannel shirt to associate their truck with a working class client.

3)Fear

Various interest groups often use fear in informational commercials to emphasize their point. For example, an anti-smoking group that features images of a diseased lung in its advertising is using fear to accent its point that smoking is unhealthy. Another example of manipulative advertising that uses fear is cracking an egg into a skillet while comparing the egg to the human brain when it is on drugs.
http://smallbusiness.chron.com/examples-manipulative-advertising-11668.html

Ads by Google
