STEP ONE (For students): Prewriting

"Choose a topic. Gather and organize ideas. Consider the potential audience. Identify the purpose of the writing. Choose an appropriate genre." For me, prewriting is one of my favorite steps of the writing process. It allows me to be creative and write down as many ideas and choose what I think is going to be most successful for the paper at hand. Right now, my students are working on an assignment about human rights. When they began their paper, they used a number of different texts that they had annotated to start creating ideas. It was great to see the wide variety that the students came up with despite reading the same works.

"Publish writing in an appropriate form. Share completed writing with an appropriate audience." When a work is completed, I am so proud of myself. I want to be able to share it because I know that if I fully used all steps in the writing process thoroughly and properly, it is a paper well written. Having pride in academic work is important to teach, especially at a young age. In the fifth grade level, I try to show students that it really is cool to try hard in school and be proud and confident of their work that they have put time and effort into.

STEP THREE (For students: Revising

"Share drafts in revising groups. Participate constructively in discussions about others' drafts. Make changes to reflect these discussions. Make substantive rather than only minor changes between the first and final drafts." When I revise my own papers, I like to color code and use different colored highlighters and pens for different things. This stage is so important because here is where we assess how we think we originally did on our assignment, and how we can make it better. Using other individuals' advice and strategies can truly improve your own work, which is something that I have been sharing with my students on their current assignment. It is important, however, to make sure that you encourage students to keep their writing their own style and full of their own thoughts instead of copying others.

STEP FOUR (For students): Editing

"Set drafts aside for a few days. Proofread. Correct spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and grammar errors." I have found that if I don't give myself some time to breathe when writing an assignment, I overthink everything and end up making too many or not enough edits and the paper as a whole suffers. When editing, I tell my students that it is important to be thorough but it is also important to make sure that the little things are taken care of, such as grammar, spelling, and capitalization. These little things end up making a difference in the overall success of the paper, and I want to ensure that I portray that message to them.

STEP TWO (For students): Drafting

"Write a rough draft. Craft leads to grab readers' attention. Emphasize content rather than conventions." Coming up with a rough draft for me has always been what I have felt to be a much longer process than most, because I tend to overwrite. Writing comes very naturally to me, so creating a flowing essay usually is not too difficult for me. I was able to break apart from the "five paragraph equals an essay" formula, so now when I am helping my students, I try to emphasize to them that it's about getting the message across as best you can in whatever format works best for you, not just staying tied down to the "five paragraph" rule.
