Being with kids and teaching them about life through play and creative processes is something I want my students to experienced here at Playworks. Hello! I am Teacher Ada, one of the teachers in the Purple Room! I love children especially when we get to practice and hone our creativity and imagination.

Being able to play while creating ways to make learning fun is one of my advocacies, especially when it's an enjoyable and fun activity.

Not only do I love what I do, but we get to cultivate their love for learning as we play and explore different things around us! 🍎🌈

Bamboo Leaf 🍲 🎋

This week, we started by learning about leaves! Our friends learned about a specific tree we have at school — the Bamboo Tree. To make learning fun, we pretended to make bamboo leaf soup and used different kitchen utensils as our tools. We colored the water green to look like the leaves and used our tiny fingers to touch and pick them up. Some of my friends tried to remove the leaves one by one, while others shook the leaves off. This activity encourages our friends to be curious and observant of the bamboo leaves, while also improving their fine motor skills as they use their fingers to explore.

Oobleck Leaves ✋🍃

One of our activities was "oobleck leaves," where my friends were a bit hesitant to touch the leaves at first because of how the oobleck looked. However, when we used tools like pinchers, they were brave enough to pick up the leaves and enjoyed using their "mommy and daddy" fingers to press and play with them. This activity showed that some friends felt more confident using tools, while others were happy to touch and play with the oobleck and leaves directly. This oobleck activity made our sensory play more adventurous, encouraging our friends to use effort and problem-solving skills to pick up the leaves.

For our story time, we read a short story about sharing. We got to know about Sunny and Tizzy the tornado! Our friends saw pictures that show how to share with friends. We pointed at the pictures and even saw a red balloon! These animated pictures easily captures the attention of our friends and helps in language formation.

Looking Through the Window

During our circle time, we looked through the heart-shaped window. We sang our attendance song to see who is present in school today. While singing our song, our friends dances and smiled a lot. During this part of circle time, we practice recognizing faces and familiarizing ourselves with the people around us.

Yogurt Painting 🎨🍦

For our outdoor art activity, we painted with yogurt. Our friends tried to use the paintbrushes laid out and painted different streaks of bright colors. This painting activity allowed our friends to practice their grip and fine motor skills as they move their arms across the paper.

Sensory Walk 👣

Our friends were curious about what we saw on the ground. We walked on the sensory mat and felt the different textures. Some of the textures were rough, smooth, some were soft, and even hard. They felt the textures with the soles of their feet and walked very slowly. This sensory activity enhances their concentration and observation skills.

Water Play 💧⚽️

Another sensory activity is a water play. Our friends had fun playing with the water since the water was so cold. The bin also had different colored balls and in various sizes. We gripped the balls with our fingers and even tried squeezing them. This sensory activity allows our friends to practice their fine and gross motor skills by moving their fingers and making whole-arm movements.

Pulling the Ribbons 🎀 🤏🏼

For our outdoor play, we also saw many ribbons! Our friend was very determined in pulling the ribbons from the screen fence. The colors got our attention and made us interested in pulling them! We practiced our gross motor skills by using our whole arm and our fine motor skills by using our pincer grip. Our hand-eye coordination was also practiced by following the ribbons we were looking at.

Nature Sensory Coffee Grounds ☕️🪵🍂

Scooping and touching the coffee grounds was fun for our friends. We used spoons to gather and mix the coffee grounds, making marks by scraping. We also let our hands explore the different sizes and textures of leaves. Our friends felt the pine cones, squeezing them as we said the word 'squeeze.' This activity helped develop their fine motor skills while they recognized the rough texture of the pine cones. Overall, this sensory experience served as a tool to help our friends learn about the parts of a tree.

Nature Sensory Book 📖🪵🌿

During our story time, we read a special book about the parts of a tree, which included a sensory experience where we could touch the different parts. It was enjoyable to feel each part, as they had various textures, and learning about them page by page was fun. This introductory type of book helps our friends easily identify and learn about the different parts of a tree.

Washing the Dishes🥣🫧

During our outdoor play, we found dishes and a bin filled with water and soap. Our friends went to play with the water, we also scooped and poured water using the cups, bowls, and spoons. We also splashed around the water and made use of other toys and put them in the water. This activity not only enhances our fine and gross motor skills, but we also practiced our dramatic play by using our imagination.

Crawl and Paint 🎨 👶🏻

For our outdoor art activity, our friend was curious about the big paper. We saw brushes and green paint, but our friend wanted to use their hand to spread the paint all over the canvas! We also crawled by using our legs and upper body to move. This activity improves our gross body movement as well as enhance our creativity in painting!

Let’s Wash the Fruits 🍎 🍇🍋🫧

For our water activity, we washed some fruits. Our friends are interested in water play, so when we tried to wash the different fruits we found inside the wash bin. We dipped the apples, oranges, bananas, and grapes in water with soap. Our friends even used a brush to scrub the fruits! This water activity allows our friends to practice their gross motor skills as they grab, reach, and scrub the fruits.

Gardening is Fun! 👩🏻‍🌾

Another activity we had was a gardening sensory bin. We introduced different tools that we can use for gardening. The bin was filled with coffee grounds to mimic dark brown soil. We also used colored containers as our pot and shovel to scoop and mix the coffee grounds. This sensory activity allow our friends to develop their sensory and fine motor skills by feeling different textures and manipulating tools.

For our sensory play, our friends scooped pink rice that was inside a bin. Utensils and bowls were found inside and our friends were able to use them to play with the rice. This sensory activity allows our friends to develop their sensory and grip as they use their hands to grab and feel the different materials and texture in the bin.
