Arthur Conan Doyle was a writer, journalist, physician. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on May 22, 1859. In 1890, his novel "A Study in Red" featured Detective Sherlock Holmes. Doyle would write 60 stories about Holmes. He also fought to propagate his Spiritist faith through a series of books written between 1918 and 1926. Doyle died of a heart attack in Crowborough, England, on July 7, 1930

In 1886, newly married and still struggling to remain as a writer, Doyle began writing the mystery novel "A Tangled Skein" (An Embarassed Novel). Two years later, the novel was renamed "A Study in Red" and published in Beeton's Christmas Annual. "A Study in Red," which featured the popular characters Detective Sherlock Holmes and his assistant, Watson, finally earned Doyle the recognition he wanted.

Having been diagnosed with angina, Doyle stubbornly ignored his doctor's warnings and in the fall of 1929 embarked on a spiritual journey through the Netherlands. He came home with severe chest pains and was bedridden. Doyle rose one last time on July 7, 1930, when he collapsed and died in his garden, pressing one hand against his heart while holding a flower with the other.
