After attending the film and publication surgeries on the 7th of march, I have a few things to take note of.

First things first, during the showcase of the film "Fuzz" to a third audience (and to Joe who, by now has seen it countless times) it gives me perspective on what kinds of opinions I have been missing out on with other audiences. This semi-final render of my film and the audience perception of it being positive and clear leads me to then work on the publication.

However, feedback on the publication was later given when I showed a digital copy of it. The feedback being that for this diary to be more impactful a traditional approach would be nicer for further immersion. I went with that route and I soon got to work with the book.

Conceptual research - traumacore, weirdcore and dreamcore

To look for an aesthetic for the video clips is something that I need to balance as
to not scare the audience too early or not at all. The three main cores I will use
as an aesthetic choice (traumacore, weirdcore and dreamcore) tend to be reffered as each other despite their distinctions. I’ve observed some differences between the cores that will help in the tone creation and shift for my video through visual research (as shown in the left) and the differences tend to be subtle but present.

Traumacore tends to deal specifically with using liminal spaces, dark, empty
backrooms and captions to say what the person is feeling or what they want to
convey. This aesthetic and art form is mainly used by people who are coping with
some form of traumatic event or series of traumatic events (most having to do
with childhood trauma) by creating images and collages that are surreal yet
unsettling. Added with the text and captions, the liminal spaces (and oftentimes dirtied characters/dolls) become chaotic, yet the picture that is being painted is clear. This feels like a nightmare, and they want to wake up yet the things that happened to them don’t dissapear after a dream.

Dreamcore is more on the surreal side, many of it’s images use pictures of
clouds, open fields, and settings you would otherwise only find in a dream.
Sometimes .things tend to not be in places they should be, but they somehow feel
like they are ok with being in that place. Pools with no openings, empty
playgrounds, and houses with no windows. All of which exist only within the
weirdest of fever dreams one can only imagine

Weirdcore is somewhat of a cousin to Dreamcore, in which everything feels like a
dream, just a really REALLY weird one. The feeling of derealization and things just
feeling incredibly off gets turnt way higher here than in the other cores. Nothing is
where it should be. its all weird. and it feels like you’re not entirely alone.

I feel like for the artistic direction of the film, I would go with having dreamcore elements in the beginning and then slowly switching out certain images closer to weirdcore, and in the final elements pull back the curtain and use traumacore videos (minus the captions as that would not be needed to give the effects of trauma and/or dread).

Conceptual research - finding a video topic

I wanted to heavily focus on the topic
of “life” and “personal” since it’s
something I can connect with best. With
the mind maps above I focused initially
on the self and “destiny”, which lead me
nowhere. The ideas of astrology, fate
and the like felt like something detached
from me and a path that had been well
traversed by others to a point where
I wouldn’t find anything interesting or
new to say through my perspective.

So, I decided to go into a more
personal route and tap deep into my
childhood to create something surreal,
yet something unnerving but comforting.
Like “comfortable anxiety”, I wanted to
make something that would twist into
something entirely different, as if your
brain is constructing a dream as you
fall deeper into slumber.

Factual wise, the themes of childhood
friends and dreams will be chosen and
explored within this unit as part of the
themes in the video.

Since this will be a personal topic I feel as if I need to talk about my experiences with imaginary friends as a kid in the past.

Substance wise I have seen strange blobs show up every now and then in my peripheral when I was a kid, but I thought nothing of it. I tend ot also dream and see things when I am near places where mass death would occur (hospitals, graveyards, etc). It sometimes worries my parents to see that their kid is seeing ghosts, but back then I didn't see it in that light.

Looking back now it probably was very creepy of me to see what I would describe as ghosts or spirits, but the feeling of uneasiness can be used in some way for this project.

During the event we were tasked with doing two things during the day and afternoon (one task per time). I decided to do poster work as I felt that it would serve the exhibit well to have more drawings scattered around the area.

I primarily chose the amount (8 pages) as a little nudge to slenderman and it's 8 pages (one where you have to find each to escape the forest and escape being murdered by him).

All of these A4 drawings were scattered across the exhibition zones from zone 4 all the way to zone 1, each leading into the tent in zone 4.

I chose to keep the artstyle in line with the art style of the publication, as I am drawing this as if the child was inviting strangers to "visit their secret hideout". Rainbows and all.

Going into the first film review session, I had initially thought that this module would be way different than what I thought it would be.

Video wise it was essentially what the very first workshop was (only now in a digital form).

Getting to see the many topics from others is quite interesting, but the one video that caught my eye the most is the one video about atomic bombs (the one with the barbie in it). I felt like within the short time it was shown it perfectly encapsulates the horrors of nuclear warfare, all with little to no sound.

Personal thoughts - why are kids like this??

There is a saying from one of those musicals “children will listen” and I personally feel as if that’s true with
what children write in the journals and diaries. From funny, sad, painful and even scary, kids will not hold back
when it comes to saying what’s on their mind. Which will be perfect for this project as the video I have in my
head will have to do with this form of clarity (yet doubt).

Personally, when it comes to kids they tend to say really REALLY bold things that no adult would ever say in any circumstance. But really, they do this because they didn't have any clue of social cues or what to say at what time, so they just say it.

I have had way too many experiences where I'm talking to a kid, and they end up saying something concerning, yet you still have to stand there and nod ahead because you don't know if you should tell them lest their perception of the world shatter.

That is the feeling of discomfort I would want the audience to feel when reading this diary.

I tried to create a venn diagram to see and articulate the differences and similarities, and the reason "kidcore" is in all three is due to "kidcore" having different tones to it's aesthetic and art form. Kidcore can be weird and traumatic for those who have weird and traumatic childhoods, kidcore can be a traumatic dream, or just a weird one. All of which have their own subgenres that all have to do with liminal space and the uncanny.

This is a part of the worksheet where I do one task in the morning and one task in the afternoon. This is the afternoon task.

Film 1 - A lob story by Chloe

Personally I love this film for it's use of minimal editing yet humerous tone. It follows a love story between two lobsters as they go about being romantic all over the world. Celebrating anniversaries, living life, you name it. But as the movie comes to a close, they break up and the lone red lobster is left to grieve, but not for long as they find new love with a blue lobster. The setup, the punchline and the final twist ends up becoming something funny to watch. I guess I can't say much apart from "lobsters don't mate forever".

Film 2 - Hall of the Mountain King but as the song goes on the video loses it's sense of unity by Elliot

This film is nothing short of chaotic. At first I was confused as to what this movie was supposed to be about, there were a bunch of random images sprawled elsewhere, but the realization starts creeping in when I feel that there is a sense of uniformity in certain images. The ending message of "without unity there is no diversity" sells this chaotic film's tone perfectly.

Film 3 - Women taking the streets to the screens by Deja

I actually quite enjoy this film and it's references to many punk and alternative genres (and specifically women empowerment) to create a collage of the many evolutions of women breaking the norms of what "woman" should be. No longer are they relegated to only being "prim and proper", or are fixed within just one body type to be fit and desirable. Every single one of them have had enough and they will make sure that everyone knows of it. This film shows the essence of the punk movement as well, showing the feeling of being unapolagetic, fierce, and creative.
