Historical Context:

At the start of industrial revolution, children were often hired in factories to work. Probably because they were easy to control and manipulate. There were many scandals on this particular topic (ie; the mining boys, such as the breaker boys or the Lowell mill girls scandal). This triggered more check ups to be done on factories to insure some level of upholding of rights; even though this was often corrupted or dismissed.

Since these questions were answered by a silk manufacturer in front of a parliament, the document, or more specifically the answers to the questions ask are biased. They aim to defend the factory’s reputation and convince the parliament to believe that the children in the factory are well treated and even privileged.

Audience:

This document was specifically intended for a parliament logically on the topic of the working conditions of the workers of the factory, who were under eighteen. This can be identified in the document byline and also through the answer question-answer setup of the document. Additionally, the questions are obviously directed to the subject of the working conditions for the children. (ie. “Have you ever observed any inconvenience to the health of these very young children?”)

Point of View:

I think the person that originally created the document was against the silk manufacturer that answered the question. This is because of the way the questions are asked; As any journalist would know, these are called leading questions that aim to lead the question to a certain answer that is harder to negate than if it was without bias. The author most likely felt strongly about the working conditions of the workers in factories. The rest of the discussion on the author's POV is stated in previous paragraphs.

Purpose

This document serves as physical proof of James Pattison's testimony (as usually done with testimonies). This can be determined through the document byline. The form of the document is formal. Since the author was most likely against James Pattison, the document probably aimed to get him in trouble with the law.

‘Y’ is The Document Significant?

This document is an example of the corruption or possible corruption that took place in factories. One cannot take this document and it's answers as they are presented. The person who answered these questions has a motif to lie: protecting his company. Because of scandals such as these, regulations and
rules started being implemented to protect workers (such as in the Lowell mill girls).

DOCUMENT N: Max Saada Historical Context: The industrial revolution – new factories. The satisfaction and excitement of discovering new opportunities. Audience: W.C Taylor made this tour for an investigation of the industry of Mr. Ashworth's Turton Mill maybe for the government. There were no details about who is the audience but I guessed that it was an investigation because the main character is making a tour of the factory and is judging it. Point of View: W.C Taylor is the author of the document. The author’s POV about the factory is very positive, he describes all the advantages of the factories.Purpose: The following quotes show document was created to describe a factory and to show to the audience what are the advantages: “The conditions in the mill are exceedingly favorable”; “The working rooms are lofty, spacious, and well ventilated”; “the labor is executed by the steam-engine or water-wheel” (etc…)The authors is satisfied with the concept of factories which leads to a great description of the factories with many advantages and not a lot of defaults. The format of the document doesn’t really shape its purpose, they are three paragraphs which represents the tour of the factory and it’s really well described so I would say that three is the prefect numbers of paragraphs that we need for this Tour.‘ Y’ is The Document Significant? This document promotes the outcome of the Industrial revolution (1820-1840). The document was created in 1840 at the end of the Industrial revolution when factories appeared in all over the world. The document is credible because it’s based on the outcome of an important revolution.

Historical Context: At this time in England, the Industrial Revolution was flourishing and there were poor conditions in the factories. The author of the document dislikes this and s against the poor conditions.

Audience: Because of the way the document is written, one can tell that it is written as a journal of the person’s life, and he is not directing it to a specific person, but instead is relating his story. Because of this, one can say that the document is directed to the public, and it’s purpose is to inform of the terrible conditions in factories.

Point of View: The person who wrote this document was a mill boy in the Industrial revolution. He probably came from a poor background, as richer people would not commonly be subject to such terrible conditions. One can say this, because in that time if families didn’t have money for school, boys would go work at mills to gain some money.

Purpose: This document was created to inform of how people were treated and what measures were taken in factories during this time. We can determine that this is the purpose of the document, as the author is constantly giving examples of his bad treatment.

“Y” is the Document Significant: Because it is a primary source on the subject, so it’s view on the document is more accurate. However, if the author had personal opinions toward the factories since he was greatly affected by them, he might be biased towards a negative aspect on the topic.

Katie Kaiser: Document C C. T. Thackrah, "The Effects of Arts, Trades and Professions, and of Civic States Habits of Living, on Health and Longevity.", 1844 Historical Context: What are the immediate historical events that shaped /triggered this document? Industrial revolutionChild labour in factoriesFactory Act of 1844What is the environment of ideas, attitudes, + emotions behind the creation of the document? He has a negative attitude towards the conditions in the factory. Audience: For whom (specifically, generally, logically) was the document intended? Logically, this is directed towards factory owners because he wants to get better working conditions for workers, especially children. What details in the document help you attribute the audience? The overall tone sounds like a complaint to factory owners for example, “No man of humanity can reflect without distress on the state of thousands of children roused from their beds at any early hour, hurried to the mills, and kept there till a late hour of night…kept in an atmosphere impure loaded with noxious (poisonous) dust. There is scarcely time for meals.”Point of View: Who (specifically, generally, logically) wrote/produced the doc? A parent, doctor, or someone who generally cares alot about children and health issues. Is there a reference to the author’s POV (i.e. his/her professional, racial, gender, social background) in the document biline? If not, can you infer it?I can infer that the document is about the negative effects What details in the document reflect the author’s POV? “No man of humanity can reflect without distress on the state of thousands of children roused from their beds at any early hour, hurried to the mills, and kept there till a late hour of night.” He clearly cares for children since he thinks no one can stand the fact that children have to work under these conditions. PurposeWhy was the document created? To spread awareness about the harms of child labour, in order to get working conditions to change. What elements in the document help you determine its purpose? “The children were almost universally ill-looking, small, sickly, barefoot, and ill-clad.” This shows he is spreading how the working children feel, so he wants to make others, especially factory owners aware of this. How does the author’s point of view shape the document's purpose AND/ ORHow does the format of the document shape its purpose? (e.g. Is a visual/ photo more emotional than an essay?) This article is very descriptive to show how badly working conditions are. This persuades the readers because they have empathy for the workers. ‘Y’ is The Document Significant? How does the document impact/shape/reflect popular arguments on the subject? This document reflects how working conditions were at the time, and shows that people were concerned with it. This made an impact on making the Factory Act of 1844. How does the document reflect ‘continuity or change over time’? Now child labour is not very common because of laws that were passed. In some places working conditions are very poor because factories want to produce goods cheaply, therefore employees are of little concern. However, it is not seen as much as it was in the 1800s. What are the limitations of the document? (Is the document credible?) He is a little biased because it says “I stood in Oxford-row, Manchester, and observed”, so these facts are only coming from him. Also he only shows the negative side of the conditions and not positives of the argument.

DOCUMENT M (Aidan) Historical Context: What are the immediate historical events that shaped /triggered this document? What is the environment of ideas, attitudes, + emotions behind the creation of the document?During the industrial revolution factories needed workers, nimble workers, so they made child workers. The conditions that these children worked in often subverted the public eye. Children were forced to work in unbearable conditions to earn miniscule amounts of CA$H for their families. Audience: For whom (specifically, generally, logically) was the document intended? What details in the document help you attribute the audience? To the middle and upper class people in england not running the factories. Clearly the factory owners would know that they have horrible working conditions, so it can't be to them, and it can't be to the workers, because they can't read. we can be sure that it is for the middle and upper class of England in the way the author describes the reaction of the people who do not know of how life is like in a factory. .Point of View: Who (specifically, generally, logically) wrote/produced the doc?Is there a reference to the author’s POV (i.e. his/her professional, racial, gender, social background) in the document biline? If not, can you infer it?What details in the document reflect the author’s POV? Francis Trollope was a writer who often wrote about the injustices that certain peoples faced. she and her family faced financial issues in her early life and this is more likely to make her wish to stop the system in use at the time. Purpose Why was the document created? What elements in the document help you determine its purpose? How does the author’s point of view shape the document's purpose AND/ ORHow does the format of the document shape its purpose? (e.g. Is a visual/ photo more emotional than an essay?) To make people see the horrors in a normal day in the life of a Child working in factories. ‘Y’ is The Document Significant? How does the document impact/shape/reflect popular arguments on the subject? How does the document reflect ‘continuity or change over time’?What are the limitations of the document?

The document is significant because it helped shape a growing opinion that the children should not work in the factories. her book helped shape the opinion because Francis Trollope was an known writer and had gained fame from her previous books like the "DOMESTIC MANNERS OF THE AMERICANS" or "BELGIUM AND WEST GERMANY". this document is not credible as a source because it

</sub>

iaceb

John Fielden , THE CURSE OF THE FACTORY SYSTEM, 1836 Brendan Historical Context: This paragraph was written after the industrial revolution and farmers moved to work in factory and entire family, even the youth had to work in dangerous conditions. The fact that the document is talking about the premature deaths of many of John's companions is putting a bad light on the factory system. Audience: Because the piece was written in 1836, it is a plea against the factory system for other people working in it. It states facts about his work days over 10 hours and hazards in the working areas.Point of View: The author of the document was a child factory worker as a kid we can tell because he says “I remember being set to work in my father's mill when i was a little under ten” and is now writing about the effects several decades later. He is qualified to write about this because he experienced the harsh conditions and long working hours of the factory system.Purpose: The purpose is to warn people away from the factory system, his by isis on the document is against the system because of his hard experience in the system. He talks a lot about how his friends who worked are almost all dead and appeared much older than they really were. The format is a paragraph because it is serious and this is a simple form to put it in rather than a poem or painting.‘Y’ is The Document Significant? The document reflects on the time because there was a lot of struggle with harsh work hours and conditions in the factory system. The limitations is that the document does not highlight the strong side of the system and the benefits but just the harmful effects. Factory have changed in developed countries we have committees for making sure factories are safe and minimum wage laws are inforce

Historical Context:

What are the immediate historical events that shaped /triggered this document?

The endangered child workers in the factories, specifically the textile industry, who were mistreated and exploited by factories. They were often dieing in the factories due to exhaustion or dangerous machines.

What is the environment of ideas, attitudes, + emotions behind the creation of the document?

The author makes the reader pity the girl and her father. There is almost an accusatory attitude towards the factories by exposing the conditions in which the girl is working in. There is also a solemn atmosphere to let the reader recognize what is happening because of the new capitalism.

Audience:

For whom (specifically, generally, logically) was the document intended?

The parliament; most specifically the factory owners.

What details in the document help you attribute the audience?

Firstly, the author is a member of the parliament. Also, the author mentions the conditions of the factories and the maltreatment, which are conditions that the factory workers would be able to change.

Point of View:

Who (specifically, generally, logically) wrote/produced the doc?

Michael Sadler, a member of Parliament.

Is there a reference to the author’s POV (i.e. his/her professional, racial, gender, social background) in the document byline? If not, can you infer it?

The author was a member of parliament. I can infer that that he was fighting for worker’s rights, maybe specifically children’s rights, in the factories.

What details in the document reflect the author’s POV?

The author mentioned the early working hours, the low wages and the skinniness of the child, which were all rights the workers did not yet have.

Purpose

Why was the document created?

The document was created to raise awareness on what was happening in the factories by putting the leaders in a position of empathy towards the workers.

What elements in the document help you determine its purpose?

The element of the mother and brother’s death, and the little girl’s death, make the leaders feel empathy. The focus on the harsh machinery and long hours circulate the subject of the harsh factory.

How does the author’s point of view shape the document's purpose AND/ OR

How does the format of the document shape its purpose? (e.g. Is a visual/ photo more emotional than an essay?)

The author’s viewpoint shapes the document towards views of human rights and their enforcement. Having the message communicated through a poem in this case is more effective than an image as the poem can describe the whole storyline, while an image might be more captivating for a single moment rather than the whole evolution of the situation.

‘Y’ is The Document Significant?

How does the document impact/shape/reflect popular arguments on the subject?

The document shapes the argument of needing labor unions and lowering the child working age around that time towards more liberal views by showing the conditions of the factory and how these affect the lives of the people working.

How does the document reflect ‘continuity or change over time’?

This document reflects how much the working conditions in western countries today have changed (at least legally). The child in question would not be allowed to work in today’s world, and today there are always adults at children’s sides, the child would not be alone with other children. Moreover, today working hours are decreased, and there are safety precautions for machines that the company has to take.

What are the limitations of the document? (Is the document credible?)

The document is credible as we now know that this is what often happened to families working in the factories. However, it might not be as credible as a diary entry for example as though it is based on the truth, it is a made up story.

Document H Peter Gaskell, 1833 -Adrien So long as home education is not found for them, they are to some extent better situated when engaged in light labour, and the labour generally is light which falls to their share. However, the bringing together numbers of the young of both sexes in factories has been a prolific source of moral delinquency. The stimulus of a heated atmosphere, the contact of opposite exes, the example of license upon the animal passions--all have conspired to produce a very early development of sexual appetencies.
