We have been keeping busy on Stobswell Pocket Places since our last update. Here’s what we’ve been up to:

Planning Permission for the Pocket Park

The application for planning permission for the pocket park has now been pulled together and it will be submitted in early February.

The application includes the change of use for the carriageway on:

Craigie Street - this will enable a more permanent pocket park to be built in this space;

the junctions on Balmore Street and Park Avenue to add raised tables, making it easier and safer to cross for those with reduced mobility, especially people who use mobility aids such as wheelchairs or walkers;

and the junction at Arthurstone Terrace, to create a buildout that will reduce the crossing distance for people walking and wheeling, and tighten the corner radius to encourage vehicles to reduce their speed.

Once it is submitted, the planning application will be available for you to add your comments on the Council’s website. Watch this space for updates!

Shopfront Shutter Artwork

We’ve commissioned local artist Louise Kirby to bring a splash of colour to Albert Street. Louise is currently working with our Community Engagement Officer to talk to local businesses between Arthurstone Terrace and Whaler’s Close about this exciting opportunity to add artwork to their shopfronts. Progress will be posted regularly on the blog, with artwork scheduled to be completed in the spring.

Other active travel updates

Finally, did you know that the Highway Code has been updated? This means that people walking, wheeling and cycling are now recognised as the most vulnerable road users. Sustrans has worked with partners to inform the Department for Transport’s newest and significant changes to The Highway Code, which has come into effect on Saturday 29th January. The new rules also apply to the Stobswell Pocket Places area and mean that road users who can cause the greatest harm, will now have the greatest responsibility to look out for others. You can read more about it here.

We will post monthly updates on Stobswell Pocket Places on our blog.

Newsletter update February

Stobswell Pocket Places has been progressing in the month of February. Here are this month’s highlights for the community:

Artwork

Artists Louise Kirby and Gordy Craw have now started the design process to progress mural and shutter art in the area.

An alumna of Morgan Academy, Louise is a local artist whose work can be seen on nearby Eliza Street. Her connection to the area, unique colourful style, and experience of delivering community-driven street-based artworks made her stand out among the eight artists who applied for this commission. Louise and our new Engagement Officer, Fiorella Modolo, continue to meet with shortlisted business owners on Albert Street to develop design ideas for their shopfront shutters. The artworks will reference Stobswell’s natural, architectural and cultural heritage that local people have highlighted throughout the project, with installation programmed for late Spring.

Local lad Gordy Craw is a talented artist who recently worked with Stobswell Forum to add artwork to some of the shopfront surrounds in the shopping district – you may have seen his work on BeFriends or Dora’s Fish & Chips. His bold and characterful style won him the commission for the artworks proposed for Langlands Street. Gordy will deliver a series of artworks to bring interest, colour, and vibrancy to Langlands Street. A visual of Langlands Street created to inspire the artist can be seen above. Other improvements planned for this key connection to Albert Street include additional lighting and signposting to local destinations within walking distance.

Design

Our design team are busy putting the finishing touches to Craigie Street (pocket park) and the junctions on Balmore Street and Park Avenue (raised tables), as well as the junction at Arthurstone Terrace (buildouts). The finishing details are being decided based on feedback we received from the community at public events held last year and discussions with our delivery partners

Designs will be presented to the Dundee Access Group in early March to inform our detailed Equalities Impact Assessment which aims to ensure that the designs we’ve co-produced with the community create a space that is accessible and inclusive to all The Dundee Access Group provides a forum for discussion regarding accessibility needs of people who live in, work in, or visit Dundee, and will provide feedback on the Stobswell Pocket Places designs.
