1. What is the poem’s tone? Which words reveal this tone? Is the poem ironic? - Jason

The poem's tone is serious and rebellious. Starting off with with the strong statement, "The Soul selects her own Society-". This poem can be seen as rebellious because the soul decides for its own, not letting any other outside variable effect it. Then she continues on talking about how she sees her soul as a queenly figure with chariots, and an emperor kneeling before her. This poem is not ironic.

Isaac Llamas - 5. Are there any symbols? What do they mean? Are they universal symbols or do they arise from the context of this poem?

The Emperor who comes to beg for the soul's favor is a symbol that represents the amount of power and success it has. For example, "an Emperor kneeling upon her mat" shows the respect and emotion the emperor felt when kneeling on the mat. I believe the poet added this for symbolism because you should always show respect when entering an individuals house.

Isaac Llamas - 4. What figures of speech are used? How do they contribute to the tone and meaning of the poem?

The figure of speech that is being used is alliteration and the usage and reuse of the same consonant sound at the beginning of many words is a type of repetition. For example "society" and "soul" was used in the beginning of the poem.

6. What is the theme (the central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence? Elaborate on your idea. - Jason

The theme of this poem is you set your own standards. Throughout the poem it talks about how she visions how her soul is some type of queen and things that show that are, "Unmoved - she notes the Chariots... Unmoved - an Emperor be kneeling...". With chariots carrying her and a Emperor kneeling before her, she is seen as a queen.
