I would thank the student for telling me and let them know that kind of language is hurtful, discriminatory and inappropriate. I would let the student know they are welcome here and we validate the experiences of all LGBTQ youth and staff and want them to feel safe

"When I heard you clapping about the kids who live in the trailer park going to a different school next year, I felt disappointed that was your reaction. I think highly of your as fellow teachers and I'm surprised that where these kids live or their parents' income bracket is something that impacts how you feel about teaching them."

As an individual who identifies as a minority who may be looked down upon, those sentiments were inappropriate because of the reference to race and specific jobs.
