This is the most powerful think you can do to encourage students. Whether it is stating that your student makes a great line leader and you smile and nod a them as a sign of approval for a job well done. Another great feature technology offers help with the use of email allows you to celebrate What students have done and allow students to be celebrated by their parents or the person receiving the email. Another non-verbal connection you can make with students is one that corrects them with out any words being exchanged so they don't feel called out by the teacher in front of the group.

What has worked for me in the past is having students join a group whether it is through facebook or twitter and have their first assignment be an interactive posting that requires them to respond to at least two other students as a get to know you game. Overall this is usually an easy icebreaker for students to learn the technology and purpose of having multiple ways to communcate with you in this digital world.
