What a Child Nurse would do if ringworm is present.

As tinea fungal infections are transmittable and contractible, nurses must carefully regulate the spread of the infection. They can do this by implementing preventative measures however, first they must analyse what fungal infection it is using diagnostic testing which can be easily done through observation. By using the signs and symptoms as an indication of the infection, a conclusion can be made that the child has ringworm as there can be a clear sign of a ring-like rash, acute inflammation, swelling, itchiness, etc. The nurse can then talk to a superior or the doctor of the patient to discuss prescribing any cream, gel, or tablets which can then be booked with the pharmacist. From this the nurse can help to manage the rash and allow it to heal faster and prevent leaving scaring on the skin.

On the body and groin: it begins as a ring-shaped, flat, scaly rash. Gradually the ring becomes larger and raised, with the inside of the ring clearing. Ringworm on the skin or groin usually appears four to 10 days after contact with an infected person, pet or surface.

On the scalp: Sometimes crusty areas develop, which may be mistaken for dandruff. If left untreated, the area can become boggy (spongy), discharge pus and develop areas of hair loss. This form of ringworm is most common in children. Scalp ringworm usually appears 10 to 14 days after contact with an infected person, pet or surface.

On the fingernails: if the nail bed becomes infected, it can become thick, brittle and discoloured.

On the feet: ringworm causes dry, cracked skin, most often between the toes. It can be quite itchy. It often does not have the usual ring-like appearance.

Other impacts are it could cause the child to become very irritable and experience a lot of discomfort. Mainly due to the itching.

https://www.rch.org.au/kidsinfo/fact_sheets/ringworm/#:~:text=Sometimes%20crusty%20areas%20develop%2C%20which,infected%20person%2C%20pet%20or%20surface.
