"Gas! GAS! Quick, boys! -An ecstasy of fumbling" Conveys a quick rhythm illustrating surprise and tension in the poem. The exclamation marks highlight the shock of the gas attack and gives the poem a hurried, uncoordinated feeling. It shows how alarming the situation is and how urgently the soldiers need to fit their masks on. The word "fumbling" creates a clumsy feeling as though the soldiers are very worn out and almost don't have the energy to get their masks. Owens also uses the word "ecstasy", meaning a panicked state. This word is very different to the situation that it is used in as "ecstasy" is usually used in blissful situations where as in this line, Owen uses it to convey a life or death situation.

'Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud'
This phrase shows that the war was awful. There was always a lot of hardship and the pain. They use cancer as a metaphor to highlight the pain of the war, and 'bitter as cud' is a metaphor to how the soldiers had to live. They always had to be ready for attacks, to move in case of attacks, and weren't taken care of correctly. They didn't always have enough food and water and always had to see friends die beside them.

The three verbs create a repulsive sound. The idea of someone drowning - unable to breath in the open air is shocking as there is nowhere to escape.
