"Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then but that's no matter-to-morrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther..."(180).

When this quote was used, it was the second to last paragraph to the novel, Gatsby has died and Nick is reflecting on how Gatsby believed in the light. Eventually one day Gatsby believed that his dream would come true, but each year it was further and further away from him. He tried to get Daisy till the day he died, with each year trying to get her attention more and more till eventually he died, and as he looked upon the green light, he'd try harder, do everything he possibly could to one day get his dream. This quote embodies Gatsby and his lifelong quest to get Daisy, that as he did more and more, he couldn't see the dream had already fled him; no matter what he had done, Daisy would never have left Tom to be with him and he couldn't accept that as the truth so he would make his dream more and more extravagant hoping one day he would get all he had dreamed of.

"Compared to the great distance that had separated him from Daisy it had seemed very near to her, almost touching her. It had seemed as close as a star to the moon. Now it was again a green light on a dock. His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one."(93)

At the time of the quote, Gatsby, Nick, and Daisy are still inside of Gatsby's mansion and as Gatsby looks out his window he says that if the mist weren't there they could see Daisy's house with the green light at the end of her dock. As he says this and as Gatsby has now what he had always dreamed about, having Daisy. His goal has been reached so now he only sees the green light, as just that, a green light that has always been there and will always be there. For all this time it had always been a symbol to him, that the green light had been the reminder that he would have to try harder, and do more if he could get Daisy. Now that he has her in his arms, it has lost its meaning, and remains just a green light. As it says so eloquently above, "His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one", Gatsby no longer needs to look at it as his goal, for he has finally succeeded in getting what he had always wanted, and now the light had lost its purpose to him.

The American Dream

The green light relates to the theme of the American Dream; the one goal that we all want to get and achieve. If I can just get this, then I will be perfect, the one idea in our mind that would make our lives exponentially better than before. That reminder came in the form of a green light to Gatsby, the constant reminder that he had put in front of himself to always have his dream ahead of him. Finally once he got his version of the American Dream, the reminder had lost all of its value; which can be seen in so many of us. Once we finally get that dream we have been chasing for so long, the idea seems to lose all of its value and we are then onto the next thing, or want that we have, and we keep putting these material ideas and eventually keep chasing these dreams that we have, not making us complete but keeping us occupied as we do not focus on what is truly bothering us deep inside.

Characters Aligned With the Green Light

Gatsby is closely associated with the Green light, it is what drives his every move and every decision that he makes is related to that green light on the end of Daisy's dock. To him it is so much more than just a light, to him it is the chance that he sees to undo the past and finally change back time that he wish he could've gotten.
Nick as well is aligned with the green light, as he becomes closer and closer to Gatsby, Nick shares in the idea of the green light. In a way Nick turns the green light into his own, saying how enchanting it was to see Gatsby reach out and grab for the light. Although Nick does not specially address the green light, he does agree that it is enchanted and the goal of Gatsby to reach and get it. Just as Nick has his own dreams it is like Gatsby and the green light, him chasing for his own dreams.
