"I didn't feel like celebrating. After all he'd put himself through, I couldn't believe Dad had gone back to the booze." Jeannette always had faith in her father that he would eventually stop drinking like he said he would but he would always fail. She was simply imagining fastasys from her parents rather than facing the straight harsh reality.

In the book Jeanette and Brian found a ring in the mud but their mother refused to sell it."But mom," I said, "that ring could get us a lot of food." "That's true," Mom said, "but it could improve my self-esteem. And at times like these, self-esteem is even more vital than food." Even at the worst moments of their life their selfish mother still chooses herself over feeding her starving children that are in desperate need of food and other resources. The kids are in charge of taking care of themselves and have to act as the adults in these situations.

Jeannette was only three when the side of her stomach was burnt because she was caught on fire while cooking hot dogs for herself. When she was back home from the hospital and resumed to cooking hot dogs for herself, her mom simply said, "Good for you, you've got to get right back in the saddle. You can't live in fear of something as basic as fire." Jeannette did not hold a grudge about about the incident or blame her parents for the lack of responsibility even up until now in day. She's learned to forgive yet remember.

"He glared at us, "You kids make me ashamed. Do you hear me? Ashamed!" He turned down the street to Junior's bar. We all watched him go. "You're ashamed of us?" Lori called after him." The kids were old enough to realize their parents weren't the ones putting the effort to make a change of their living circumstances. Especially their alcoholic father that was buying alcohol rather than food for his family.

Unconditional love

I felt my face turning hot. "You're not supposed to laugh at your own father," I said to him. "Ever." "Aw,now, don't go get all high-and-mighty on me," Billy said. "Don't go and try and pretend you're better than me.'Cause I know your daddy ain't nothing but a drunk like mine." Jeanette is well aware of how much of a drunk and how problematic her father is. However, she always defends him whenever she can and in any way despite how rough he makes her life throughout the book. It's an unconditional love relationship between herself and her parents.

Broken promises

"Since we couldn't afford to pay the town's trash-collector fee, our garbage was really piling up. One day Dad told us to dump it in the hole. "But that's for the Glass Castle," I said. "It's a temporary measure," Dad told me." Both Brian and Jeannette realized over time that the foundation for the Glass Castle was just going to stay as a trash pile and that the Glass Castle itself would never happen. Luckily Jeannette was able to be successful on her own and create her own version of the Glass Castle happily. The quote and image are an exact representation of broken promises.
