         <description><![CDATA[<div> <strong>Type of adaptation:<br></strong>Structural<br><strong>Purpose of adaptation:</strong></div><ul><li>To protect themselves from predators</li><li>To protect themselves from water loss</li><li>To help them blend in with the various environments in which they live</li></ul><div><strong>Description &amp; Explanation<br></strong> These scales are moveable and are actually made up of hairs that have  been fused together, making them strong and durable.  Because the scales are so dense, they are also very heavy, making up 20% of the animals' body weight.  As well as being extremely tough, the scales are very sharp and pangolins are able to swing their long tails around, using them as a jagged club. These hard pieces of keratin even protect against desiccation, or water loss, and their brown color helps pangolins blend in with the various environments in which they live.  </div>]]></description>

For example, Venus flytraps have long, stiff <strong>trigger hairs</strong> inside their traps. These hairs tell the plant when there is a live insect. The trap won't shut unless multiple hairs are bent, indicating that something is moving around inside the trap. This prevents the plant from wasting energy by trapping things it can't eat, like stray leaves that might have blown in.<br><br></div><div><br></div>]]></description>

The backs of its moderately long and rounded ears are black with central white spots. Body and limbs are marked with black spots of varying size and color, and along its back are two to four rows of elongated spots. The tail is about half the size of its head-body length and is spotted with a few indistinct rings near the black tip. The background color of the spotted fur is tawny, with a white chest and belly. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Type of adaptation:  </strong>Behavioral<br><br><strong>Purpose:</strong>  To ward off predators<br><br><strong>Description &amp; Explanation:</strong>  When attacked, slugs can contract their body, making themselves harder and more compact and more still and round.      <br>     By doing this, they become firmly attached to the substrate. This, combined with the slippery mucus they produce, makes slugs more difficult for predators to grasp. The unpleasant taste of the mucus is also a deterrent.<br><br>        Some species present different response behaviors when attacked. In contrast to the general behavioral pattern, the slug retracts its head, lets go of the substrate, rolls up completely, and stays contracted in a ball-like shape.<br><br><strong>Type of adaptation:</strong>  Structural<br><br><strong>Purpose:  </strong>Move across dry land by reducing friction<br><br><strong>Description &amp; Explanation:  </strong>The slug produces mucus, the same substance found in out nose and lining our intestines.
