Building Trust and Safety:
I think the biggest thing I do to develop trust is to be consistent. I have the same expectations for all students and hold them to the expectations consistently.

I use "walk-and-talks" sometimes as an anticipation activity. The students discuss assigned topics while they walk around. The only rule is that they have to continue moving and talking about one of the topics.

Try to work one on one with students.  It could be simply checking in on their daily progress, helping with an assignment, or requiring a teacher-student conference before turning in their resume.  

Strategies Used:
Reflections sometimes are not just writings.  Using tools such as SMART ART or 3D Paint students can add images and make simple explanations or descriptions.

I also consistently compliment good questions and/or answers in group discussions.
