The Puritans came from the Church of England and were members of the religious reform movement called Puritanism. The Puritans left due to religious persecution but also economic reasons. They also left their home to remove any remaining Catholicism because they believed the Church of England was similar to the Roman Catholic Church. Their names came from a term that is contempt assigned to the movement by its enemies. They left by migrating on a ship called the Mayflower and arrived on August 5th, 1620. When the Puritans came to the Americas, they struggled with food shortages and with a disease that wiped most of the colony. They also faced challenges with unfriendly relationships with Native Americans.

The Puritans found importance in personal religious experience, education in religious leadership, and the demand that religious motivation is tested by applying them to practical situations. Puritans highly believed that it was necessary to have a covenant relationship with God in order to be redeemed from one's sinful act. Their belief was that God chose to reveal salvation through preaching and the Holy Spirit would be their guide to salvation. The formation of the Puritan's teachings was influenced by Calvinist theology and polity. Their expectations of how people should live their lives are by a spirit of moral and religious earnestness.

The sort of writings that came out of this period was the Geneva Bible, a book of Martyrs and Gangraena by Thomas Edwards.
-The Geneva bible was the first bible in English to add numbered verses. It was also one of the firsts to include extensive commentary notes, which were later deemed "seditious".
-The book of Martyrs provided justification to English protestants to view England as an elect nation chosen by God to complete the work of the three major branches of Christianity.
-Gangraena by Thomas Edwards was about a book attacking the religious division in the city of London after the English Civil War. Thomas Edwards was a Puritan clergyman who was critical to those that offered different theological positions from his own.
