One formative assessment technique I saw was observation: both visually and aurally. Ms. Thrasher was able to observe the students as they practiced dancing to 8 beats. She also could see and hear if the students could follow a beat pattern on their drums.
Another form of formative assessment is students' reactions to the lesson and/or task. If they take something that she's taught, make it their own, and then are eager to share it with her--they not only show engagement, but they also show that they're "getting" the concept that is being taught.
Robin H.

I chose to analyze "Graffiti: A Digital Identity". I really appreciated that the instructor taught his students to perform their own formative assessments. Students did this by using feedback from others regularly throughout the construction of their project to help them adjust their designs. He also did a great deal of checking in on their original sketches created in their notebooks, before students moved on to the digitizing phase of their design.
He also might wish to have students give written reflections partway through this process. It could help identify any issues with understanding of the assignment that the students may have.
-Amanda C.

When watching the videos on this I couldn't help thinking that UDL is what many teachers strive for every day. We are constantly looking at our students to see how they might learn best, and then creating lessons that work for all those differences (as best we can). One reason I love teaching art classes is that there is so much freedom to incorporate different learning modalities.
Written and verbal directions, discussions, and a hands-on project with visual examples and/or rubrics are my go-to format for a standard lesson. On top of that, taking the interests of my students into consideration often helps keep them engaged.
-Amanda C.
