"They were happy, or at least as happy as a family can be when it's burdened by a grief too large to be absorbed by time." 

This is after finding out about Kira's and Peter's tragedy in the past. This is why Kira counts her children's heads every day, why she calls Peter to be a nuisance. 

There are a lot of characters to keep track of, but eventually, it gets easier. Leo, Maya, Kira, Peter, Kevin, Sune, David, Zach, Amat, Bobo, Benji, Caretaker, Ana...A lot, but it has gotten easier. I tried looking up a guide and it ended up spoiling a bit of the book for me, but yeah. Amat, although I know his name is pronounced (Au-mit) and not (A mat), is easily my pick. He works so hard for what he is trying to achieve. Despite everyone literally pushing down again and agai for his age and height. 

Amat is a selfless character looking out for his mother who has to clean up the rink every day. He is incredibly fast on the ice and an even more incredible fighter. He did something that I probably couldn't even do. He went out onto the ice and gave it his all the day it mattered the most. He got up knowing he was going to be hit down again. In one paragraph, the point of view is on Kevin, the next paragraph, and it's on Ana followed by Amat then Peter. There really is no pattern to his switching. At least none that I have found. There isn't a special character that indicated when the POV changes. Like in John Green's novel "Will Grayson Will Grayson," it switches characters when all the writing became lowercased. (This is Will Grayson) (and this is the other will grayson.)

I'll be reading a page wondering why Benji is talking to his dad he no longer has until I realize that it is now in Maya's POV. (Funny, but not really...)

I wish the author had put in some indication in when it switches characters. Calling her names and saying that this is all "her" fault. 

I s'pose that happens in today's society. When something happens, like a car accident, people will take sides of the person they are more fond of or friends with. So what's difficult for me to think about is how complicated a scenario like this can actually be. I don't know if it usually goes down like this where everyone knows and they take a side with the person they are more fond of. I literally had a dream on this, and it was all a mess.

I am going to start bluntly. Beartown was difficult to read. Not because it had mature topics. But because it had so many characters, because it had so many stories going on at the same time, because it switches POV without warning. I had such a difficult time trying to figure out whose POV the individual paragraph is in, that I hardly had time to actually visualize what I was reading. 

The characters have grown up by now. Beartown hockey is starting over with younglings and most of the others have moved away to play in Hed with David. Beartown will be recognized by a new hockey player. A young girl in ten years' time will be better than all the others. The best they have ever seen.

Beyond that, it was so slow. Except for the ending where everything was getting resolved or otherwise. I was bored reading this book most of the time. It's a great story, but I think it was told in a poor way.
