And then discovery how fun it is to jam along with those video's on my cornet (as well as Trumpet and Flugelhorn) that "clinched the deal" of me now really like be bop!

I am finding in improving on my cornet with these that Bebop harmonies are so complex that one can play pretty much anything and it will sound OK, maybe not all that great, but neither all that bad.

I think that is why I am having so much fun improving to bebop in that it is very forgiving, sort of like modern classical music and so unlike older classical music.

These are great for practicing improvising solos over and such. And BTW, one reason I like to do improvs is that I am so bad at reading music notation unless it is pretty slow like quarter notes or either notes and such, but anything much faster and I tend to get a bit overwhelmed where I find it easier just to improv and fake it.

This is not Be Bop Jazz but seems to be close to it, i.e. one off, where I can play a improv with this on my cornet that is pretty jazzt that seems to work with this. And one can imagine substituting western instruments for these such as a cello for the bowed instrument, and a western flute or sax and such.

So in my continual search for new sounds and inspirations for the "perfect" jazz band sound this llooks quite promising!

Now it seems that here are several types of musicians, professionals who make their living performing music, the musical amateur, i.e. people who do it for fun, and people who do it because that is what they are and what they do, let's call that an existential musician, singer, composer, arranger, or the like.

For example I (sometimes) drive a car, in that is something do but is not because that is who I am, but out of necessity. But I ride my bike not just out of any necessity but that in part who I am, a cyclist, albeit not all that fit of one, but my 450 watt E-bike can make me feel young and fit even though (as I readily see whenever I turn off the power) that I am in reality neither.

Nor am I what one might call a serious cyclist, such as a roadie, no, I don't wear spandex bike clothing when I ride nor shave my legs nor am I a cray, dare devil mountain biker, but I was a bike commuter for many years before retiring. But all that said, I am a cyclist, even if not all that a dedicated one!

And it seems that these (types of musicians) are not inherently mutual exclusive in that one can be more than one of those or even all of those.

So I am not (and never want to be) the first, one who makes a living performing (or composing or arranging) music in that to be successful at that one has to be really good (or at least convince others that one is), be able and willing to work hard and long at practicing and preparation, please others (something I am neither good at or care all that much about as well, network and have connections and the like.

And if one is lacking in any of the above one might (or even just one) they may also be a starving musician as well, and as cool as it is to be a starving artist in one sense it is not so cool in another sense, in that there is much to be said about eating vs starving, even if one does the later "for art's sake".

So I am quite happy to be (and always be) an amateur!

But it may also be the case that I might just be the later (i.e. the existential musician) as well in that one might just be a jazz musicians even if one is just an amateur one, or even not that great of one, that still does not mean that one is not one.

But even if one is not the very best, that doe snot mean that one does not always aspire to become better, that is part of the fun of being an amateur in that one can do that, but at one's leisure and own pace.

And oh, I left out a fourth type, music educator, a quite important role at that!

But I am not that either, that is a teacher, but rather I find that I often play the part of an encourager, in that I like to encourage those that might be one or more of the above four, albeit maybe perhaps at times a bit too over enthusiastically, but then again , ha, everyone has their faults... and knowing what they are is (for sure) quite useful, but maybe not in itself enough to overcome them.

But neither should one indulge in them either and use the above as an excuse for doing so. Or the way I sum this up is that one should not ever overdo overdoing it.

And who knows, sometimes a bit of enthusiasm, even if it might be (at least ostensibly) a tad bit on the overenthusiastic side, might be just what the doctor ordered and as such might not always be all that bad... and that's my story and I am sticking to it!

Also, the music one loves to listen to may not always be the same music one likes to play. For I love classical music! And I would love it if I could magically play it as well.

But barring that, I don't love playing it enough to put in the long hours of practice to learn to play it, and probably would never get all that good even if I did.

In contrast I love playing jazz, probably quite a bit more than I love listening to it in that it is fun to play, and (in many ways but not all ways) maybe a bit easier to play, where one can be more relaxed (like not overly worrying or full of angst about the possibility muffing notes.. or having done so).

And that said, I think it would be a really good thing for me to work a bit harder at that! For the better one gest, the more fun it is to play as well, not to mention that one might sound better to others as well!

On the other hand, being able to make great improvs is not quite so easy and many a classically trained musicians never learns to do that.

So each has its pluses and minus as to fun level, aesthetics, and stress level to play and such.

And BTW as I am writing this I am listening to this, which sort of sums up what I am saying here on more than one level in that I often enjoy hearing the young musicians play over the professional in that they seem to be so full of hope, where life has not yet (hopefully) quashed (or is it squashed) that many of those hopes as they are overtaken by reality.

But then their is that hope eternal that looks beyond this mere mortal life and music can speak to that hope as well... and that makes music all the more cooler and worth pursuing, even if there may be bumps along the road into the pursuit of those hopes and dreams.

And BTW, the older I get, the closer the later looks and the more distant any of those bumps recede away in my rear view mirror as well, as my perspective on life keeps getting all those many updates along the way that tend to mature us and help us better see things as they truly are and not so much as we thought (or wished) they were.

But as we read in 1st Corinthians 13, love never fails, and so might too one's love for music (or whatever), even if that "success" might not quote turn out to be exactly as one earlier imagined it to be, the reality can be even cooler!

So on that note, let me end this rather long winded comment with this, where (as I jam along on my cornet) that love that is here to stay (for me) just might be (in part) my love for (both hearing and playing) jazz music!

Now this band has more of a gypsy Jazz and here with the banjo) Dixieland sound but I am including here anyway, 'cause I like them! They have a great sound!

Also, it looks like they are having great fun as they are playing their piece.

Like the old joke goes, sincerity is everything in comedy. If you can fake that you've got it made!

So whether they are in fact having fun or just faking it, they (either way) or quite convincing.

That is one aspect of jazz that might be easy to overlook. One cannot just sing or play a part on their instrument need to convince the audience that they are indeed feeling the part, even if it is just good play acting.

For example I have seen many a quite technically gifted jazz singer on YouTube videos that sing their parts well, but at the same time just don't convince me that they are feeling what they are singing.

So if one is singing about say being heart broken one needs to not just sing the right notes and such but also convince the listener that in fact one is heart broken, which (hopefully) they are not but just are faking it, albeit quite well. And one way to do that is to remember those times where one might have indeed been a bit heartbroken an draw from that to recreate that feeling in the song.

A great example of this is Judy Garland in that what ever she sang, she was totally convincing, and maybe a bit too much so at times, given the many tragic events in her life!

And such fakery is not to deceive others (say to take advantage of them and the like) but rather simply to better entertain them just as any good actor can do!

That said, if one is performing say in Church or some worship service, one would hope that one is not just faking it and the feelings are for real, that being the big difference between a mere performance vs actual worship! For one might fool others by doing so, but not God, which should be the whole point of doing a worship song, to direct it to God and not merely for show!

And that does not necessarily mean that one should be all blubbery and all that. But there is having a feeling and feeling the feeling. So one can truly say one is sorry even if one at the moment is not feeling all that sorry if one indeed is sorry. Or even if one might not feel as sorry as one might should, that does not mean that one is not in truth sorry.

As such authentic emotions do not necessarily mean one is feeling them at that very moment in time, but that they are real feelings, even if not at that very moment real.

For if one is concentrating on what one is playing or singing that sort of precludes any real time feelings other than when they might hit one, and those indeed cannot be planned or faked but happen when they happen! And to attempt to fake such occurrences seems to seriously risk being quite disingenuous at that!

And all that is not to say that one should be happy putting on a bad show, and especially of one is a paid professional, that is what one is hired to do. So, hopefully, in such cases one can do both, be totally genuine while at the same time putting on a good show as well, the two are not mutually exclusive!

I might add here as a side note that occasionally I see signs of forced happiness and such where the performers put on a façade of being happy but that one can see through the cracks that it is not real. That is not good but is rather a bit creepy instead! For even if one is faking having fun, one at least can have fun faking having fun verses trying to force that.

Finally, I might add that mostly this is all just theory in regard to my part in that I have little actual experience (live) performing other than singing in a Church Choir. But lacking any practical experience has never really stopped me before so also not now!

But I have watched many a performance with a critical eye, that as as to critique and not so much to criticize, though I may indulge a bit in that too on occasion (my bad). For there is this saying I heard someone say...

Judge not least you too will be judged!

And I have also have done a boatload of recordings but that is an entirely different can of worms. There the question is can one on the tenth retake then sing it one more time... with feeling.

Swing Cajon

One can only play a brass instrument like a trumpet or cornet so long before one shoots their lip and have to take a break from playing. So of lately I have taken to playing hand drums as well, and one of my latest acquisitions is a portable Cajon (see here).

Only instead of using a strap or trying to hold it on my lap I have found that what works best for me is to put my left hand thumb through the sound hole and hold it with my left hand where I can use my pointing an index fingers on my left hand to strike the edge and my righthand can strike it anywhere and I can quickly flip it over to its back side in that one gets different sounds there.

But what I like about my Gecko Portable Cajon is that it is small, light weight, fun to play and easy to jam along with most any YouTube video and not sound too bad.

So here in this video they have larger Cajons that one can sit on.

I also have bongos and a bongo stand much like they have in this video as we.. They are fun to play as well. Only I have attached a bunch of other stuff using clamps to it as well such as tambourines, jam blocks, cow bell, and such.

They also have congas which I want and are on my wish list but are at present a tad outside my budget, nor do I have room for them as well. But none of that keeps me from wanting them!.

I've always loved this song as well!

And while I love the sound they have it makes me a bit sad as well, in that my middle Brother, who is now (sadly) deceased tried to pull off having an orchestra like this back in the 70's in Atlanta with the Dave Wilson Orchestra.

The times were just not quite ripe for that, but are (it seems) now.

He offered me to conduct it (though at the same time it seemed a bit reluctantly, and maybe with good reason at that) but at that time I just graduated from engineering school and was starting my career in that.

As I look back that was the right decision, but a hard one, and one that still deeply pains me to this day!

How I miss him! But hearing bands like this really cool in that his vision did not die, it just took a while to bear fruit!

And this pretty much wraps up my little study here of Be Bop music and Cool Jazz in that I am once again rediscovering that I am not a be Bopper nor am all that cool but my (musical) taste go back to an earlier era.

While I grew up in the 50's and 60's I watched a ton of older movies then set in the 30's and 40's and since the have come to love the 20's music as well.

But it is cool have modern bands can play these with a vintage sound but a modern version of that as well!

But then again, Be Bop is what they played after playing the dinner and dance scene at the hotel Ballrooms (as with this next piece), so maybe one can be both!

So the answer is try play a F# and Ab, that is if playing in the Key of C.

Composing music (even for improvs) is like a machine that runs on batteries in that the batteries can get a bit low and need to be recharged at times.

And for me one way to do that is to listen to what others play in the hope to find performers that can rekindle that creative spark needed not so much to compose but to compose things that are not just formulaic drivel.

For drivel is easy to crank out, and endlessly so, but hat is the point of doing that. And the problem of making something that is not all bad is that it raises the bar so that it becomes a hard act to follow.

And add to that buggy music software that is either crashing or taking forever to load (or so it seems) and that makes it all the more difficult to become inspired once one's batteries have run down.

At any rate I think this is not all bad, something I haven't been able to say about any of my recent attempts to create new music.

So maybe that is a hopeful sign!

OK, in many ways I have been searching for the instrument that I might someday be able to master. My latest foray into that (after attempting to learn many other instruments) has been hand drums (which I definitely have been getting better at but still am not all that good). But I am beginning to think that the only instrument that perhaps I might ever master is the baton.

But maybe to "play" the baton might require learning to play the instruments one might conduct with it, even if not all that very well.

For a conductor does not merely set the beat (like some human metronome) but attempts to aid the performers to bring out the feelings of the piece and set the mood, plus to help to put on a good show, not as the star of that show but more like an agent that helps fuel the many stars that are being conducted to shine ever the brighter and breathe life (and as Alex says here in this video) energy into the music, not to mention that the best "seat" in the house is to stand right in front of the band or orchestra, be it on the stage of in the orchestra pit or even rehearsal hall.

And yes, that is was a long sentence, but one that should be that way in that just as all the musicians and singers (or dancers as well) need to at as one just as these thought all flow one into the other as one grand thought, that being to reflect on and bring out the love, the glory, the joy, the laughter, the longings, the sorrow, the heart break and pain and tears that can be all expressed in music, things that are real and that all can share through the power of music to uniquely do so!

And as such I have been having fun conducting along with great YouTube videos like this one. And it is a workout at that!

Don't know how anyone that is a bit down cannot feel at least just a bit brighter after hearing this!
