He wanted a building built in Gothic Revival style on Broadway, the building was in front of New York City Hall. He appealed to Cass Gilbert , whose style was inspired mainly by the fine arts. The building was to house the head office of the discount chain of stores tun by Woolworth , the Five-and-Ten-Cent-Stores .it opened on April 24, 1913, with a final height of 241 meters , while the original plans provided for a building up to 190,5 meters. The total cost of construction was $ 13,5 million, settled in cash . At the inauguration, Woolworth was in Washington, from where he pressed a button that started 80,000 bulbs that had been placed on the building. The Woolworth Building was also named the tallest skyscraper in the world. This title was kept by the Woolworth Building from 1913 to 1930, where it was overtaken by 40 Wall Street which culminated at 282 meters. Until 1945, an observatory welcomed visitors to the 58th floor of the Building in the same way of the Empire State Building which remains a reference for tourists, being located in the heart of Manhattan.
