The Dada movement was a form of activist or protest art. Using a range of materials and techniques the art was very much an expression of political sensibilities. Collage and photomontage was a form of expression that captured the notions of assemblage, rework, and the transformation of imagery and text from mass media. The appropriation of existing images or objects and to recontextualize their meaning is an artistic strategy used by many artists.
Here is a "Very Brief " history of activist art and a starting place for discussion and further research.

Computational Surrealism is a workshop aimed to experiment with making and programming as tools to address political, environmental or social issues and express ideas through art.
The starting point is the historical connection between the Surrealist movement and Activist art and its potential for the design of interdisciplinary educational experiences.
The typical setting for the workshop starts with participants playing a surrealist sketching game, “Exquisite Corpse” where singular sketches are assembled as a piece of collective creative work (a “Corpse”).
Each "corp" can be enhanced into an artwork that represents an activist goal by using some Surrealist Art technique (cutout, collage, frottage) and by also creating vectorial drawing and cutting them with a vinyl cutter machine. The micro:bit and some actuators (LEDs, servo-motors) are used to give the artwork action and interactivity.

"Many avant-garde artists, from the earliest days of modernism to contemporary postmodernism, use collage to question the traditional role of the artist. By using found, often mass-produced, images and objects that the artists themselves don't make, collage undermines the traditional importance placed on the presence of the artist's hand in an original work of art. Additionally, often relying on chance to create compositions, many artists use collage to subvert the importance placed on the artist's creative genius in composing works."
from: https://www.theartstory.org/definition/collage/
