Other ELLs do not look forward to school because they are a victim of bullying. Over the past few years, bullying has become a serious problem in schools throughout the country. According to an article I found titled “8 tips to Protect ELLs from Bullying in Your Classroom and School”, it states, “In addition, many educators across the country are reporting an increase in the bullying of immigrant students and ELLs, often with immigration-related taunts (Gándara & Ee, 2018a). ELLs are often easy targets of bullying because their foreign accents and different cultural mannerisms are often mimicked and teased in school. This can cause ELLs to question their identity and culture and possibly even start to resent themselves. What can we do to help?

There will be consequences for those who break any classroom rules. Students will be made aware of these consequences as a list could be hung up on the board or wall. Remember that even the most slight changes could mean that is a serious issue under the surface. Anything that your students witnessed when others were being bullied should be taken very seriously as well. ELLs may realize they are a target for bullying when they witness their ELL peers getting bullied. Provide administrators with examples of how ELLs can be bullied. Some ways ELLs can be bullied that the article states are "mimicking their accents, making fun of their racial differences, laughing at the cultural mannerisms and cultural idiosyncrasies, and more"(Lizard). Help administrators understand how they would feel if they were to enter a school in another country without being able to communicate sufficiently and being teased for that.
