We visited Germany during my summer break.

Germany’s most famous cake, the ‘Black Forest Cherry Torte,’ gets its name not directly from the Black Forest region but from the specialty alcohol of that region which is made from sour cherries. According to German law, this alcohol must be present in the cake for it to be called the Black Forest Cake. The cake has alternate layers of chocolate sponge cake, cherries and whipped cream and is topped with more cream, maraschino cherries and chocolate shavings.

Germany has approximately 1,200 different types of sausages (or ‘wursts’ in the local language), of which one of the most famous ones is the Nuremberg Bratwurst. It is small, thin and light and typically made from veal, beef or pork. It is usually served at breakfast. There are more than 40 varieties of the Nuremberg sausage recipe. The name ‘Bratwurst’ is derived from the traditional ‘High German’ language meaning brat – finely chopped meat and wurst – sausage. However, in modern German it is associated with the verb ‘braten’ which means to pan fry or roast.

Naira Mehta
2-G

We stayed in a medieval castle near Edinburgh, which Mary Queen of Scotts had visited many times. She planted beautiful trees in their forest, which still exist.
The weather gets quite cold even in early summer, specially in the highlands and the Scottish are known for their hearty breakfast. I had the Scottish Salmon with Scrambled Eggs... yummy!
For lunch it was the Haddock , which we call 'Surmai' in India. Our meals gave us the energy to be Strong as The Scottish and we walked many miles trekking into the Forests and hills.
One day a Bagpiper at the gates of the Castle played his pipes specially for us and I have included a small clip below.
Enjoy the music!
Christina Nagpal 2G

I wish I could eat these dishes everyday.

Brot & Brotchen - I ate bread for breakfast everyday . It’s in the form of a loaf (Brot) or a small, usually crusty roll (Brötchen), is an important part of the cuisine, which is eaten all over the country and served with most German dishes. Bread is enjoyed with most meals, especially breakfast.
Germans enjoy a wide variety of bread including grain, Pumpernickel, rye, and white bread. German bread tends to be heavier and heartier than bread from Italy, Spain, or France.

Kartoffelsuppe - i ate this as part of my lunch, Kartoffelsuppe is a traditional German, Austrian, and Bavarian soup made primarily with potatoes (Kartoffeln).

Kasespatzle - I ate this for dinner, a dish from the southwestern regions of Germany, Käsespätzle is made from layering small Spätzle pasta with grated cheese and topping with fried onion. It is usually served with a salad and sometimes with applesauce. It’s the German version of Mac and cheese.

Black Forest gateau - last but not the least , though I could not eat this dessert because it has alcohol, it is known as a traditional dessert in Germany.
The first recorded mention of black forest cake was found in a cooking text from the 1930s and it became more popular after World War II. It is believed that the cake can be traced back to the 1500s, back when Europe first saw chocolate being available.

We went to The USA this year for summer vacation. We found it difficult to find enough variety of vegetarian food there. There is a huge variety of desserts available there. One of the most popular desserts is Apple Pie. Although apple pie has its origin in Europe, apple pie as used in the phrase "as American as apple pie" describes something as being "typically American". Modern American recipes for apple pie usually indicate a pastry that is 9 inches in diameter in a fluted pie plate, with an apple filling spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice.
Some fun facts about pie are

The earliest apple pie recipes omitted one key ingredient – and that’s sugar.

Let me give you a sneak peak into the Lankan Diaries!
Mythological stories about Ravana capturing Sita would always fascinate me. Finally I was vacationing in Sri Lanka, our island neighbour with my family. I visited the exact spot where Sita ma was held captive in Nuwara Eliya. I was thrilled!
Sri Lankan food is very spicy. Locals eat rice and curry and it is their staple food. They also eat a lot of sea food. I was shocked to learn that they eat pickled quail eggs!!! I saw a jar at a local grocery.
Im a vegetarian so I ate veg curries and sombhols. However I found it toooooo spicy and my tongue would burn. So I would gulp it down with tall glass of yummy wood apple milkshake.
Wood apples have hard shells with tamarind paste-like pulp. When added to coconut milk and sugar its a yummy woodapple milkshake! I loved eating the colorful hoppers too.
The hoppers are very similar to 'appams'.They are made from fermented rice and coconut milk batter. I relished the beetroot and mint hopper.
My parents loved the different teas they tasted.
When we did a village tour in Kandy, a typical local meal included a curry, poultry, fish or egg and sombhol. They also ate Mallung a green leafy salad made with green chillies, onions, grated coconut and coriander.
I miss the woodapples in India as nobody has been able to make the milkshake they way they did. If I were to visit Sri Lanka again I would definitely try more of the local dessert!
Aahana Kothari 2G

Treasures of Ladhak - Thupka, Momos & Apricots (Khubaanee)

This summer vacation I visited Ladhak - a union territory in North India. Ladakh is a beautiful mountainous region tucked in the Indian Himalayas.

Fun fact: Ladakh means “land of high passes”. It is one of the highest settlements in the world; inhabitants of Ladakh live at an altitude between 2,800 metres and 4,500 metres above sea level and oxygen levels are lower at these attitudes.

Ladakhi cuisine is not very spicy and it mainly originates from Tibet. Barley flour, called tsampa, is the traditional staple food of Ladakh.

1. Thupka
Thukpa is a much-loved classic of Ladakhi cuisine. It is a clear soup with vegetables and noodles made of wheat or barley flour. This dish is available in vegetarian as well as in non vegetarian version (non-vegetarian Thupka often contains meat such as pieces of chicken, mutton or yak). It is the perfect dish to keep one warm in the winter.

2. Momos
Momos are dumplings which are generally stuffed with minced meat, vegetables (cabbage, potatoes, carrots, onions, spinach) and cheese. Momos are either steamed or fried and they are usually served with chilli sauce. Momos are often shaped like a lotus flower or like a crescent.

3. Apricots
Apricot (or “chulli” in Ladakhi language) is the most popular locally-grown fruit in the region. Beautiful apricot orchards can be found in different parts of Ladakh. Several products are made from this fruit such as jam, fruit juices etc. Dried apricots are a favourite among Ladakhi people.

Krisha Sharma - 2G
