Introduction: From 1929 to 1945, extreme issues were met by a sense of national unity among Canadians. Major barriers were posed by the Great Depression and World War II, which had different effects on people and communities. While some Canadians struggled to find work and experienced financial hardship, others were able to adapt and take advantage of possibilities in the war-related industries.

Canadian women already had a lack of rights like having to stay home to look after the kids once married and sharing the same legal identity as their husbands. Fortunately, after the war, Prime Minister Borden extended the vote to all women aged 21 and up. However, most women of colour like Chinese, Hindu, or Japanese weren't allowed to vote until the late 1940s.

In the 1900s, women in Canada faced sexism regularly. They were denied voting rights, could not have a profession in relation to law, and once married they could not keep their own wages. In 1905 a Supreme Court judge in New Brunswick stated, “the paramount destiny and mission of women are to fulfil the noble and benign offices of wife and mother. This is the law of the Creator" yet women were still denied custodial rights over their children. Women started movements, forming groups, and protesting for the sexism and double standards but quickly got punished for it (“Women’s Rights - Canada’s Human Rights History”). Some examples of groups they created are the Woman's Temperance Union, the Fédération Nationale Saint-Jean-Baptiste, and the National Council of Women of Canada(“Early Women’s Movements in Canada: 1867–1960 | the Canadian Encyclopedia”).

Many men believed that women were insignificant and should only be used for domestic duties. They believed that women were less capable than men in fields like politics, business, and education. However, it is crucial to remember that not all males share these opinions. There were men throughout the country who were themselves suffragists and who lent their support to advancing the women’s cause (“Suffragents: Men Who Worked for Women’s Suffrage - National Women’s History Alliance”).
