Paying attention to critical issues in books is important, because it showcases to students the inequities some individuals face. It allows students to feel comfortable as they can relate to the books presented in the classroom.

Paying attention to critical issues or perceived inequities in books is an essential component to teaching social studies because it gets students to think about how history has impacted social interactions of the past and how it can prepare them for the present and future issues of inequity. It is important for teachers to get students to critically think about history and social studies and to bring in their own perspective (knowledge and experience) when discussing these in class and prepare them for their futures.

When using books in our classroom we have to make sure that we read the book and make sure that it shows the culture or religion appropriately. I believe this is one of the biggest steps in teaching, because as teachers we are also learners and as learners we must research the books and material to see its truth or validity.

I think it helps students understand that they are not alone in feeling inequities. it helps build empowerment with in our students and awareness within our communities that we are paying attention to the world outside of the classroom. we want to make a change and what better way to start then in the classroom. We educate ourselves and pay it forward with our knowledge with these books.

It is important to pay attention to critical issues or perceived inequities in social studies books because often times these messages are hidden or underlying and are difficult to grasp especially as children. It is our job as teachers to help students uncover the true message of the author and understand the purpose of the text. What is the author trying to tell us and why is it important for us to think about?

Depicting critical issues to students in the area of social studies is important because it provides students a way to have a "outside" view of History from a critical standpoint. It enables students to analyze how History has changed over time. It additionally allows our students to think about how they would like to see the change they want to see in their future. Regardless, allowing our students to see this critical issues is a way for students to teach from a multiple perspective and allowing them to see that there is no one "singe story" .

It is important because, if students bring up questions about issues within books and we were not aware if the issues ourselves, we may not be able to have deeper discussions about the issues at hand. It is also important because if a book we are using within our classroom includes offensive language/topics that were "socially acceptable" at the time that they were written, it would be important to have a discussion about the issues and why they appear in the writing before the students are exposed to the text.

Students can see what happened before and look for ways to solve or work out the issues or inequities. It also shows students about how things may or may not have changed. It allows students to relate or get a better understanding of what others are or have gone through. Hopefully teaching empathy.
