how was life like without social media?

parents: i used to use pager, motorola flip phone etc to call each other. But i am less updated of the things now.
less stressful, people were able to focus on themselves without getting distracted by what others are doing (trends etc), more carefree.

me: born into the era of technology. i have not experienced how life is without social media. But i think without social media, i will feel very unmotivated and lonely, since cannot scroll through tiktok anymore :,)

how has technology changed relationships 

people become more distanced, lesser time spent with each other (face to face), less connections with loved ones. 
However, we are now able to keep in touch with people (that we are not that close to) online since technology is at the tip of our fingertips.

how do you think the current generation's use of technology differ from yours

me: use technology to check on friends and new trends (instagram, tiktok)

parents: use technolhogy to check news 
use social media less often (facebook), dont really have interest on social media 

do you think advancement in technology has made loneliness more prevalent in individuals today/ how often do you and your relative feel lonely

me: often, especially when im stressed

father: not very often, sometimes i feel lonely because i cannot relate with my children when they discuss about the current trends that i dont know of

mother (dont have social media, rarely use phone for entertainment): dont feel lonely at all


do you find social media meaningful?

father: yes and no. some information are really rubbish and there are many scams and fake news out there. causes more confusion.

however people increasingly turn to social media for news since it allows users to engage with news in a variety of ways

  • With the absence of social media, life felt more fulfilling for some because they were able to live in reality and enjoy it rather than being stuck up behind multiple screens. People had more face to face interactions and bonded with the people around them frequently instead of building new relationships before even being well acquainted with the people around them. 

How did social interaction take place? 
  • People were more open and welcoming to one another and visited one another’s neighbors at any time of the day for a heartfelt conversation and children played with one another outside their homes. The ‘kampong’ spirit was very distinctive as the absence of social media gave people the chance to step out of their homes and interact with one another through other forms like, inviting others for meals, helping out one another in times of need, taking care of neighbors’ children and etc. 

How has technology changed relationships?
  • Technology has helped people build better relationships with others whom thy distanced from however, this has resulted in them not paying attention to heir current relationships and upholding their responsibility towards these relationships such as simply towards parents and loved ones. Technology has also of course made it easier for people to find other like minded friends whom they can build strong relationships with.
