During his presidency, he built the Republican Party into a strong organization. To be able to pass the 13th Amendment, he had to persuade votes. At first he did not support it but then was able to support and abolish slavery.

Mary Todd Lincoln

Mary, played by Sally Field, served as first lady. She served up until her husband's assassination. Mary did acknowledge how inhumane slavery was but she did not believe that every race is equal. Her family were slave owners and she believed that this amendment would put the end of the war off. She didn't want her son to have to go fight in the war.

Thaddeus was an abolitionist that worked timelessly trying to put an end to slavery. He secured the passage of an act to confiscate property. This included slaves.
