The goal during the Women's Rights Movement or the Feminist Movement was to get more rights for the women of America. Many women and even some men were trying to change the view of what a woman was. Some were advocating for equality in the workforce, marriages, and to break the sexist stereotypes that were placed on women. An example of the stereotypes and expectations that were placed on women, is that they only belong as a wife, and to run a family. While many were venturing into the workplace, the only available jobs were those such as nurses, secretaries, and teachers, etc.

During this time, there were many women who held protests and lobbied to the government to bring about change in America. Some of the most memorable events were those held at the Miss America pageant (1968), and many women lobbyed to the government to take part, and make changes for equality. There was also a movement in which some women decided to burn their bras, and refuse to wear them. This was done to show that the women did not need men and could be independent.

As it was mentioned earlier, some women lobbyed to Congress to pass laws in order to bring about change form women. One of the most important laws to be passed was the Civil Rights Act, which made it illegal to discriminate in the workplace based on gender or race. The Equal Rights Amendment was being advocated for in the 1960's, but it did not go to Congress until the 70's, and then did not pass.

The National Organizaiton for Women (NOW) was began by an activist named Betty Friedan in 1966. The group set out to fight gender based discrimination in America. This was attempted and accomplished through providing aid in court battles, and making their voice known in legislature. NOW was just one of many groups formed ot fight discrimination in the 1960's. Today, NOW reached all over the U.S., and is stilll very strong.
