If you don't nurture love, it shrivels up and rots.
"cory: The whole time I was growing up . . . living in
his house . . . Papa was like a shadow that followed you everywhere. It weighed on you and sunk
into your flesh. It would wrap around you and lay
there until you couldn’t tell which one was you
anymore. That shadow digging in your flesh. Trying
to crawl in. Trying to live through you. I’m just
saying I’ve got to find a way to get rid of that
shadow, Mama."
Troy didn't nurture or bond with his son and instead pushed him away. It ended in resentment from Cory to Troy. Cory thought of him as a shadow more the a father. Someone to always watch out for. That is a prime example of how fragile love can be.

The two play take place a around the same time period. They both talk a lot about family dynamic in a home. The roles of the husbands and wives are closely the same also. The men strong, hard headed, and selfish. The women would be domesticated, understanding, and quiet. The traditional household with the traditional roles

Even with that there are lots of differences also. Things like the sons had very different relationships with their fathers. There fathers had almost opposite parenting skills. Walter spoiled Trevor and encouraged his hopes and dreams. While Troy wanted Cory to just accept what was comfortable and crushed his dreams of playing football.Rose was a lot more comfortable and talkative with her husbands friends the Ruth.
