I went to the market... (By Scott Thornbury)

I had read this activity in a post written by Thornbury and I sometimes use if for fluency focused grammar practice in my classes.

I went to market …

This is a well-known children’s memory game, but it can be adapted for grammar practice. In the traditional game, one person starts by saying I went to market and I bought a pineapple (for example). The next person has to repeat what the first person said, and then add one new item: I went to the market and I bought a pineapple and a dozen eggs … and so on, round the class.

Players who can’t remember an item are 'out' and the game continues until there is one winner. As it stands, the game is good practice of vocabulary, plus two past tense verbs. But you can increase the grammar practice by slightly modifying the formula. For example (to practise past simple):

I went to London and I saw the Princess of Wales.

I went to London and I saw the Princess of Wales, and I read The Times.

I went to London and I saw the Princess of Wales, and I read The Times, and I climbed Big Ben, etc.

You can make it a rule that players are not allowed to use a verb that has already been used. Other structures you can practise like this are:

Going to
Making New Year resolutions: This year I’m going to learn drive, and I’m going to grow my hair …

Present perfect
My poor uncle has never flown in a plane, and he’s never drunk champagne …

Second conditional
If I were/was a millionaire, I’d … and I’d …

In fact, any structure can be adapted to this game: use your ingenuity!

I also like games because they are interactive and add a competitive element into learning, which learners like a lot.

Students can be given a topic that interests them and asked to discuss it. For example, "What are some of the biggest challenges facing the world today?" Groups can consist of three or four students. When assigning groups, less active students can be placed alongside more active ones in the class. This way, active students can encourage participation from those who are more passive. Selecting an interesting and current discussion topic can help students express their opinions more freely and engage in longer dialogues.

My favorite activity in my booklet is role play. Encouraging role play in the classroom provides students with the opportunity to practice the target topic in a real-life context. Whether the subject to be learned is grammar or vocabulary, using grammar in communication becomes inevitable, thus enhancing fluency in this area. When conducting role plays, students learn while having fun. Moreover, since students prepare together in groups, role play also contributes positively to classroom dynamics.

think using physical touch should be really considered because some learners may choose to stand with their boundaries about physical touch or they may have kind and firm boundaries about some questions about their personal lives, life choices, religious or political views or their family. Because sometimes they may have some inner wounds or personal feelings about these topics or something to they would not share with others in front of their peers or teachers and rather to keep it personal. So I wouldn't say I wouldn't use certainly but I would think very carefully and would analyze them carefully before doing such tasks. Learners are different like we, they are unique, different and have different characters so all of tasks, activities and their effectiveness can change depending on the classroom environment, dynamic and their personalities but most of tasks are quite effective, creative and applicable! :)

This kind of activity could be adapted to practice some points of grammar such as quantifiers. Tell Ls to organize an event and prepare a poster for that event. All the posters are stuck on the wallls. Then they present their posters to the whole class particularly using quantifiers. For example: "We have thought of organizing a birthday party for a limited number of people" , "People will bring no food". After all presentations, Ls stand up and write their names on the posters of the events which they want to attend. Then find out the event whose participants' number is the highest.

Stories engage students by adding the suspense & surprise element, and students love hearing about the teacher's personal life.

A literature circle is a small group discussion (usually between four and six students) in which every student has a role related to a book. The group members first prepare themselves for their task and present it to the group. By the end, the group has discussed the text in many different ways. When creating roles it can be helpful to start with the type of analysis you want the students to practice. For example, you might start with literary elements, like symbolism, theme, diction, characterization, etc., or you might use critical thinking skills, like connecting, evaluating, synthesizing, etc.

Objective: To foster fluency in grammar usage and creativity in storytelling.

Instructions:

Divide the participants into small groups of 3-5 members each.

Provide each group with a blank sheet of paper.

Explain that the objective of the activity is to create a collaborative story while incorporating specific grammar elements.

Choose a starting point for the story (e.g., "Once upon a time, in a magical forest...").

Assign each group a specific grammar element to focus on (e.g., past tense verbs, adjectives, conjunctions, etc.).

Set a timer for a designated time period (e.g., 5-10 minutes) for the first round.

Each group member takes turns adding a sentence to the story, ensuring that they incorporate the assigned grammar element.

Encourage participants to build upon the story in a coherent and imaginative manner.

After the timer expires, each group stops writing and passes their paper or whiteboard to the next group.

The next group reads the existing story, adds a sentence of their own, and continues incorporating the assigned grammar element.

Repeat this process for several rounds, with each group adding to the story based on the previous contributions.

Once all groups have contributed to each story, have a representative from each group read their completed story aloud to the entire group.

Discuss the stories as a whole, highlighting the creative use of grammar elements and the coherence of the narratives.

Variations:

Allow groups to choose their own starting point for the story.

Rotate the assigned grammar elements for each round to cover a variety of language structures.

Introduce specific themes or settings for the stories to add an additional layer of creativity.
