Are we after a classical formal mentorship from senior staff or is this more a peer support group. Both are important. Are they mutually exclusive ? Would both work?
- Other members agree that peer support is hugely important and would be great
- ABS keeps talking and exampling the NEST scheme in Birmingham for formal mentorship.
-Joana points out very rightly that everything works out as long as there as clear communication about needs and what a mentor mentee relationship would look like. Open communication and mutual consent is key - a platform like that would be ideal.
What would the shape of a mentorship scheme be?

Reverse Mentorship offers mentors to also learn and build relationships with their groups:•	Allow mentors to empathise with younger individuals.•	Tailor support to develop and guide group.•	Opportunity to get feedback.•	Introduce changes when needed – especially when related to EDI topics.•	Improve interactions with group.Peer Mentorship offers greater opportunities to learn from different individuals who will all have different experiences.•	More exposure to more experiences.•	This could be valuable at many different career stages, not just ECRs•	In agreement that more than one mentor would be advantageous.•	Cross institutional mentoring would also be beneficial.Informal vs formal?Formal mentorship offers more of a structure to learn.Competency based mentorship offers structure and asks the mentee to consider:•	Reflections of previous experiences•	Identification of weaknesses and strengths•	Learning goals.•	Can target professional development goals.Frequency•	Define a minimum number of meetings (if that needs increasing then you can)•	Be flexible.•	Maintain communication.Don’t be afraid to push pass your comfort zone.Benefits of being mentored by someone you are familiar with, AND someone that you do not know.
