  • Use advanced search options whenever possible

  • Identify a good set of keyword search terms - before you begin any search - identify synonyms, consider academic Vs layman's terms, possible differences in spelling e.g. USA Vs UK - the short film linked below might give you some inspiration

  • Refine your search by combining your keywords using Boolean operators =

  • Find the 'Journals A-Z' on the Library webpage

    • Using a "*" or truncation Boolean search, how many e-journals do we have which feature the keyword “ecology" or derivations thereof in the title? Your search term should look something like this: ecol* 

    Extra notes: A truncation (with an asterisk) Boolean search can be used when you want to find all variants of words that start the same e.g. natur* will find ‘nature’, ‘natural’, ‘naturalist’ etc.

    It's important to start keeping a record of what you are reading to ensure you are efficient, effective, robust & ethical researchers . The Library's referencing tools can help save you time, especially when you are writing assignments and creating bibliographies and reference lists. With referencing tools such as RefWorks you can create your own personal libraries / databases. Other free referencing softwares e.g. Zotero & Mendeley are also available

    Referencing tools available in the Library: 
    1. Cite them Right Online 
    2. Refworks (free software such as Zotero & Mendeley also available but BSU Library suppoorts RefWorks)


    • Find & select Cite Them Right Online (CTRO) to access guidelines about referencing (Bath Spa Harvard)

    • If you haven’t already, set up a RefWorks account - accessible through Database A-Z or 'Research and Referencing’Quick Link from the library homepage. 

    • Export some references to the resources you’ve found today - look for the 'Tools' Export icon 

    • Look for the 'Create bibliography' button in your RefWorks account and generate a short reference list from your exported references - using Harvard-style referencing.
