At the time America was in a heated debate of slavery and every time a new state was added to the union things got worse so Henry Clark, came up with the Missouri compromise which crossed a line through the middle of the states making the north half free states and the southern half slave states. This led to the civil war because the balance between the free and slave states in the government was tilted causing more violence and arguments.

The government came up with something called popular sovereignty which allows the people to make decisions by voting. This however backfired because people from all over the USA started moving to settle in these states so they could vote to keep or end slavery causing riots and violence between the 2 sides. There was in fact so much violence that it got its name "Bleeding Kansas". This led to the civil war because the same thing was happening in Congress with senators attacking each other, so people had had enough and this was the first time both sides actually took action and began the violence.
