Well, majority of people would answer it’s a video game; however, it’s more than a video game, it’s an addiction. Within this year, fortnite users have grown tremendously. Not only did I realize this within my friends and family, but on social media as well. It’s basically like an epidemic. I never really understood why people, mainly boys, sit in front of their tv’s or computers playing this for hours and hours, so I decided to get some input on it through someone I know very well.I went over to my cousins house and decided to ask him questions about this game. My cousin and I are very close, which made this conversation a lot easier because I simply think it’s the dumbest thing in the world. He is a very bright kid who always was very focused on his academics and learning. He was the person I looked up to my whole life and taught me majority of what I know, but since this game came out, he has become a part of this addicted community.I just don’t understand how someone just waste hours of their day on a game that has nothing to do with real life. He understood my point of view, but he also gave me the input and reasons why it is such a fun and fast growing video game. My cousins and brother were never really into gaming, but the frenzy of this game had them hooked.This is how people interact with each other. Instead of hanging out, they play this game with each other through headphones. The night before I left for vacation, my brother’s friend (who was coming with us) brought his Tv, xbox, and headset over to my house so he could play with my brother…..WHO WAS ACROSS THE ROOM. When I saw this I simply thought “Wow, this is what it’s come to, really.” This game is taking over the lives of kids all over the world, but why? Why is this game such a hit? What about it makes it so entertaining and addicting for people. My cousin elaborated on why the game is such a hit and has been growing throughout the last few months. He was never a gamer. He is a good student who currently attends DePaul. But this game has had a strain on his grades. The addiction to the game is so strong that he would much rather play with his friends than do any school work. I can definitely relate to that by having senioritis, but college matters so much more than high school. It’s frustrating to see a video game that will not matter in the future take over kids lives and destroy their chances of a successful future. It may be a great way to spend time now, but in a few years people were realized they shouldn’t have wasted their time playing this game because it might have slowed down their future plans or success. I got some interesting points about Fortnite from my cousin, which led me to have a bias on the game. I do believe it is still not the healthiest thing for people now, since they spend hours in front of a screen without moving, but I also can see the effect on how it can brings kids closer together by playing with their friends. They’re not together, but they’re getting a better way of communication than texting or snapchatting since they’re actually taking through their headphones.This game is a growing community, and the popularity will continue to increase as more updates or versions come out. I definitely found a different side to the game; the side my brother, cousins, and friends all see: the competition, the excitement, and the fun. I have more respect for the game, now that I know more tactics behind it and all the time and effort people put into it.
