Punishment is meant to accomplish some good. You might achieve that by deterring others from committing crimes; you might achieve that by reforming your behavior, and you might achieve that by other means as well. In spite of this, we should recognize that punishments are intended to achieve some sort of benefit.
Retributivism is the second theory. It is morally justifiable to punish someone who violates the law.
Perhaps it will lead to some good consequences as well, but whether that occurs is not really important; what is important is that you are entitled to suffer.
Family, education and general societal values and principles are all responsible for moral education, which leads to punishment.
It is important that punishment promotes "moral strength" within society and instils "moral action" rather than only being used to eliminate crime.

However, such punishment system tend to harm marginalised and minorities in the society who may not have equal access to resources as compared to other members in the society. This could possibly lead to them resorting to acts that contravene societal norms. It shows how the Singapore government is committed to eradicating the use of drugs in Singapore.

However, even with punishment in place, it does not completely prevent the crime from happening (Tanzir, 2022). A comparative study on the effectiveness of death penalty among Canada, Bangladesh and Sudan.
