Antigone is a member of the royal family, which theoretically grants her a higher social standing than a woman in ancient Greece. Although Antigone’s power is severely limited. Women in her society are expected to be submissive and obedient to men. Antigone tends to stand alone in her belief. Antigone is arrested and condemned to death by Creon, this illustrates how little power she has as a woman. Despite her righteousness, she is unable to prevent her fate.

Home Fire is about three Muslim siblings Isma, Parvaiz, and Aneeka. Growing up in London, their father was a jihadist, and his past haunts them. Isma, the oldest, moves to the U.S. for her studies, while Parvaiz, feeling lost and influenced by his father's legacy, travels to Syria to join a terrorist group. Aneeka, the youngest, is determined to bring Parvaiz back home, even if it means making difficult choices. The story explores themes of identity, loyalty, and the tension between personal and societal expectations, especially for Muslims living in a post-9/11 world. The choices made by the siblings, particularly Parvaiz’s tragic path and Aneeka’s defiance, lead to heartbreaking outcomes.

Antigone is a tragedy set in Thebes, where the city is recovering from a civil war. Two brothers, Eteocles and Polynices, have killed each other in a battle for the throne. Creon, the new king of Thebes, orders that Polynices body be left unburied as punishment for his rebellion. Antigone, Polynice's sister, defies Creon’s law because she believes in the right to bury the dead. “I owe a longer loyalty to the dead than to the living. In that world I shall abide forever.” She secretly performs burial rites against permission for her brother, and when she is caught, Creon sentences her to die by being sealed in a tomb. Her defiance sets off a tragic chain of events: Antigone dies, and her actions lead to the suicides of her fiancé, Haemon, and Creon’s wife, Eurydice. The play ends with Creon’s realization that his rigid enforcement of the law has led to destruction.

In the real world, this pattern reflects how people who are oppressed by societal structures due to their race, gender, religion, or other identities often find their personal desires, morals, and beliefs in conflict with the power systems around them aka cut short. Just as Parvaiz feels powerless due to his ethnic and religious background, Antigone is restrained by her gender. In today's society, many individuals today face difficulty in following their beliefs because of the discrimination they encounter.

Parvaiz and Antigone's stories illustrate that their struggles are not simply personal failures but simply because of the unfairness of gender roles, and families that that may restrict their choices or have specific expectations from one another. This pattern is important because it sheds light on how identity and social location can shape a person's actions and the consequences they face, showing that oppression can prevent individuals from fully chasing their dreams. Understanding this helps us recognize the ongoing impact of societal structures on people's lives and the need for change to allow more people to live authentically and freely.

Parvaiz’s power is extremely limited. Although he is a man, which traditionally grants him more of a privilege, his identity as a Muslim man in post-9/11 Britain works against him. Particularly his father's involvement with radical groups which also affects his power. Parvaiz yearns to escape the suffocating legacy of his father and find a place where he can feel significant. However, the power he finds through extremist groups is not real empowerment which becomes a form of manipulation where he is manipulated and controlled by the very forces he thought would give him control.

Antigone’s power is limited by her gender and the political authority of Creon. As a woman in ancient Greek society, her social power is already restricted, not to mention is is obligated to obey Creon. Her true power cannot be taken from her while it lies in her moral conviction and her willingness to act on loyalty, even at the cost of her life. Antigone stands firm in her beliefs, despite the cost.

In both stories, power is not just about control or authority, but about how characters navigate through systems restricting their choices. Parvaiz’s journey highlights how external forces, like societal expectations and his family’s legacy, overpower his ability to act freely, ultimately stripping him of free will. In contrast, Antigone’s story demonstrates how staying true to one’s beliefs, even in the face of great opposition, can create a form of power that exceeds physical or political control, leaving more of a lasting impact morally.
