It is especially beneficial in social studies because students are provided with the support that they need in order to decode, analyze, and understand sources. In order to provide scaffolding in the classroom, teachers must provide students with the support they need in order to understand a concept. As student understanding increases, the teacher's role decreases. With scaffolding in place, students are less intimidated by informational texts and sources and are more inclined to fully engage with them. This also allows students to critically evaluate sources. Scaffolding causes students to play an active role in their own learning, which also increases intrinsic motivation. Tier 1 reading is where the teacher instructs all students with grade level content. Tier 2 is a model of pulling a small reading group for those students who need support because they may be struggling and slightly behind their peers in reading proficiency. The teacher might pull materials that are not at grade level, or might focus on the previous years standards for reteaching. Tier 3 is for students who are 2 or more years behind their peers. Comprehension of nonfiction text is difficult for many students, but especially EL students. There are many strategies teachers can provide for EL students when reading expository text. One example would be for a teacher to model how readers should think when reading. This includes thinking aloud, using a graphic organizer, and show students how to "double check" information.

    For ELL students it's important for them to get more help understanding nonfiction text. This is because many students are learning a new language and new content in that language at the same time. That's why showing the students effective strategies to help the students gain the skills is needed because, it not only helps with understanding the content and how text structure works. Which will then help the students access content effectively throughout their education. That's why I think increasing peer interaction is important for comprehension. It's important to let students talk about why have learned with another person. Also, using study guides because it helps with focusing on the students attention on the major ideas. When student get to communicate with one another learning now information and be easier. They can help each other make connections and understand the text from one another.
