March 1790 Congress passed the naturalization bill

The bill allows any free white person who has been living in in the U.S. for 2 years, they must have "good character" to apply for citizenship. Residents of other colors are denied basic constitutional protections like the right to vote, testify in court, and own property.

February 1907 The Gentlemen's agreement is signed

May 1924 The Immigration Act Of 1924

This immigration act starts by limiting the number of immigrants allowed into the United States yearly. This was done through nationality quotas. With their new quota system the United States gives immigration visas to 2% of each nationality. This law favors immigration from the westerns, northern and southern countries.
