A way to show off and show what you really can do. Women, especially mothers would've thought War was not a noble prospect, more barbaric and uncouth. It may have seen as a new adventure.
DURING - A soldier fighting in war may have a negative perspective as they would be suffering in the harsh conditions. They would have seen their friends suffer and die. They would be living under difficult and harsh circumstances.
