Fourty-four states and the District of Columbia have state laws addressing charter schools. However, many state laws do not make charters comply with open meetings laws and conflict of interest requirements that public school districts and employees are required to follow. Also, these laws do not sufficently prevent for-profit management and operations from occuring in charter schools. Lastly, charter school teachers are not held to the same certification requirements and standards as public school teachers. With the rise in interest over these issues, mental health issues have also risen to the top of the concerns within schools. The ASCD website addresses these issue as well.  ASCD states that school safety goes beyond crisis management and fire drills. It encompasses cyber-bullying and other social issues as well. Hazing in schools, whether in sports or organizations, creates many legal issues for students, staff, and administration alike. According to the article I read on Education Dive, Pennsylvania became the 45th state to establish Anti-Hazing laws.

This commission was established in March of 2018 by President Trump and is lead by Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos. Students who feel unsafe at school are less likely to learn or retain information. School safety applies to any time students are under the supervision of the school and knowledge of safety procedures by students, staff, and adminstriation is a crucial component of it. Gun control laws and school safety commissions are at the top of political agendas, but none of these will matter if neighborhood and community schools are not prepared. 

However,  school safety is not restrictred  to just emergency procedures and drills, and the physical protection of schools. Bullying and cyberbullying have become an epidemic across the nation and it running rampant in schools. With the increase of social media, cyberbullying has seen a huge increase. Faceless attacking of students has led to higher suicide rates in students as well. 

Students need to be protected and feel safe at schools in order to learn and without proper procedures, rules, and laws, they will not.
