Have them give a minimum of five facts on the country in their video. Have them select either one prop, or one meal, that is connected to the country and explain how. What is neat with this, is you could have a potluck if they make the food. Prepare parents ahead of time. If there is a student that cannot afford to make the meal, have them just submit a recipe. Once you know the topic, determine if you want to reach out to a person in a career related to the topic or if you want to reach out to teachers in other districts. Either way, have your student prepare questions prior to the skype call. To make this so that students can understand culture of where the others are, have them ask questions that are polite and related to culture. Have them think of what they would like to share about their culture. As they are preparing this, make sure that the person, or other teacher's class, is able to prepare as well. If both are on the same page it will make it go smoother. Once everyone has gone through everything, ask students if they have anymore questions. You would select articles that fit with the standard you are trying to achieve. To go with the theme of cultural awareness, have students read about a specific culture. Separate the students into groups to read the article. Have students create a google slide on the topic. If you're focus is evidence, have students focus on finding evidence for claims they can include in the google slide presentation. Ensure that you have a job for each student whether it be that they are each in charge of a slide, or that they each have a specific job to do. This can be someone in charge of typing, someone in charge of finding pictures, others in charge of research, etc. Be creative! This is a great way to get students to work together. Have students review what other students have done. When they have read/examined two others, have them come up with a comment to leave on how they liked the project, how they may have something to add to the project, etc. Let the students know that they are to be kind. The idea is to give feedback and encourage one another. Have the students encourage the person to review their work to provide feedback to them. Once the student has feedback, have them see how they might change or alter their project to improve it. As we know, all things can be improved. Have students work with a PenPal to complete a project after they reflected. Take it a step farther and have the students respond to a peer's video making connections. You can have sentence starters such as "I like that you celebrate....my culture celebrates.... which is similar because......" or "I didn't know that your culture food has.....I like.....because....". Having those sentence starters, especially with younger students, will help them know your expectations.
